I've just spent most of the evening carrying out the very frustrating job of setting up my rear mech. I've carefully gone through all of the 'bike book' instructions several times but whatever I do it won't run smoothly. It will change between gears ok but I can't stop it rattling loudly when it's on the biggest chain ring. There's also a lot of play in the bottom jockey wheel where the rattling seems to be coming from.

It's about 2 years old so should I change it or can I get a new jockey wheel if needed?

Thanks.

Sounds like new jockey wheel at least, if it's shifting OK otherwise then you may be OK

OK thanks. I think the play in the jockey wheel is causing the chain to rub against the metal.

is the chain routed correctly?
So it doesn't rattle when in the middle chainring?
post a pic if you can.

Rick.

I made the mistake of routing my chain through the wrong channel between the jockey wheels, so it constantly clattered over the metal stay part. Took me ages to find what I'd actually done wrong, felt a bit stupid but it was quite an easy mistake to make. I think. I hope! ๐Ÿ˜€
