Just bought a 2010 Anthem X2, first ride today and there's a loud creaking from the vicinity of the BB.
Closer inspection also shows a small amount of movement in the cranks when pushed towards the frame.
Can the BB be tightened to prevent the movement (and hopefully the noiise) or is it new BB time?
XT cranks if it makes a difference and I assume original BB
Cheers in advance.
might be worth checking the cranks are tight on the bb. or strip the seals off the bb bearings and check them or regrease
What sort of BB does a '10 Anthem have, still HT2-style internal or is it some damn-fool BB-something? It's most likely to be the cranks from the sound of it but the newer BB formats can wear out if you look at them hard.
As big yim says also it helps to put some grease on the pedal threads, that cured my mystery creaking.
Cheers guys. Will check if cranks are tight.
Northwind - crank is Shimano SM BB70 hollowtech.
Probably just needs tweaked then, good news is it's really obvious when they're worn- just feel how it spins, really, they should both feel much the same.
Strip, grease and re-torque. Half hour job. Will confirm if you need new or not.
Arse. BB definitely borked, confirmed by LBS.
Does £40-£45 fitted sound reasonable for a new XT item?
I know I should probably try and do if myself but I need the bike on Saturday
If there is play in a non adjustable BB then the only way to sort that is to replace it. Yours is HTII so you can adjust it - it may or may not be knackered (roughness). You can ride them to death if you like though.
Creaking is a separate issue entirely and comes from dry/loose threads in BB, pedals or chanirings, or tightness of ST crank bolts.
Many people replace a functioning BB to stop creaking - and it works because the new BB is installed properly - but it's a waste of a BB.
Buy an xt bb from merlin for £20 and fit it yourself
