[Closed] Is it really cheaper to send small packages by courier rather than by post?

This is bike related…

I buy stuff from CRC and Amazon all the time, partly because it gets sent by Royal Mail. I’ve just had an email from another online bike bits retailer to say that my package has been sent by courier and can somebody please be in to sign for it in the next couple of hours. My heart sank. It was probably stated somewhere on their website that it would be sent by courier but I didn’t spot it.

While their price and turn around have been excellent I’ll think twice about using them again because I don’t want to give up 2 hours of my Saturday morning going to the depot to pick it up.

Couriers are a faff. Is it just me who thinks this way?

PS I’ve never had a problem with either a courier or Royal Mail losing or breaking things that have been properly wrapped.

No but it's easier to have one collection/account for everything and the price differences usually evens out across a spectrum of package sizes.

Most smaller companies don't have the technology CRC does which enables them to automatically decide on which carrier to send out a package with.

If you are CRC you get very competitive pricing from Royal Mail. If you aren't a franking customer of Royal Mail their prices are crazy.

It costs as much to send a 1kg package with Royal Mail Special Delivery as it does for me to send a complete bike with a courier!
