UK search and rescue, Made up from a selection of suitable specialists across many services including emergency services, Hampshire's UKSART team have just returned from christchurch, and pretty much did an about turn to head out to Japan, albeit with different team members.I know this as one of their top trauma guys is on my watch.

Our team as far as i know are made up from members of our Urban search and rescue team, as well as specialists in various fields such as trauma management or rope access/rescue. Also they have access to dog teams.

Urban search and rescue (Usar)are fire service personnel highly trained in domestic disaster management and rescue, whether that be terrorist or not. They initially were funded under the goverments 'new dimension' scheme that was created after 9,11. A lot of original members already had experience from being in international rescue which was the predecessor to UKSART.

Lummox implies UKSAR have taken over from International Rescue - I'm not sure thats right - I think they are different organisations with similar skills and interests; possibly with different geographic locations? I might have this wrong, and there may be some "umbrella body" for all the UK search teams?

International Rescue was started in Grangemouth and has a strong Forth Valley / Central Scotland membership. Most of their members are from the emergency services (esp. Fire) but I don't think they are exclusively like this (whereas some of the fire services have dedicated teams which are solely their staff and are funded by the fire service as part of their training / capability development).

Even if you've no specialist skills International Rescue are always looking for people to fundraise for them - and I am sure there will be some back office activities needing done. Int. Rescue also get involved in "local" emergencies including Flooding, Missing People, Snow, as well as the more obvious building collapses etc.

A friend of mine is in International Rescue... no idea what she does for them though.

That's not really much help is it though...

I was pretty disappointed that, on qualifying as an International Mountain Leader, I wasn't immediately issued with the direct-dial number for International Rescue. 😥
