As with a lot of stuff done in labs, surely some of it has to be made up to some extent.

I work in a scientific discipline and can confirm that this is the generally taken approach. If it is taking too long to get results, or we have to be home early to watch Deal or No Deal, then we do tend to just make stuff up.
I've decided to wear out completely my stock of tyres before I buy any new ones.
Unfortunately this means at some point in the next couple of years I have to look foreward to some conti explorers and panaracer fire XC's
