Evenin' all

Righty, I have a Tracer on the way and am currently totally torn between getting something light like a Rockshox revelation or something big and stiff (fnarr) like a Fox 36.

My dilemma is that approx 70% of my riding is in the dark Peaks and the remaining 30% of the light DH style at wharncliffe/occasional uplift days.

I used to have a fox 36 on my old Reign and it was great but I couldn't help think I was carrying excess weight on all day Peak's rides.

The new 36's however, are a lot lighter but still 3/4lb heavier than a RS Rev or similar.

The other thing to consider is that the Tracer H/A is 69ish with a 140mm fork or 67.5 with a 160mm fork (although I could get a Cane Creek head angle adjusting headset).

Anyway I'd really appreciate people's thoughts, I'm trying to achieve a balance between all-day-ability and stiffness/squish.

ta

(oh and the other thing to consider is that I can get revs for about £300 and fox 36's etc about twice that!)

160mm, if the head angle is to slack then you can always reduce the travel. I think i'm right in saying that on the new 36's you can easily reduce the travel by removing spacers.

If you can afford to make the rest of the build reasonably light, then go for the 36.

Especially at £400.

Yeah I spotted those fox's - only issue though is finding a suitable stem for 1.5 steerer tube.

They're also about 1.25lbs heavier than a RS Rev.

I'm not sure if that 36 talas would be too steep and twitchy in 130mm mode for flat bits and trail centres etc?!

Although intense say that the head angle is 69, I found the bike really steep with a 140 fox fork. I then bought a set of fox 36's and they transformed the bike. No problem on steep climbs and the bike felt more balanced on the descents. Enjoy your new bike.

Hmm I've heard it feels better with a 160mm fork but can't help noticing some RS revs for £300!

How do you find it at trail centres with a bigger fork btw?

The new Revalation is 150mm of travel and you can get it with a 20mm Maxle light. So you'd have the guts of the weight savings, a stiff front end and save a little weight over the Fox 36. No choice for me. If I ever get around to changing my 5.5 for a tracer it will be a Revalation on the front and not the Fox 36.

Yeah I guess it depends on the sort of riding you do.

Anyone else got any thoughts??

I had a five AM with 36 Talas, and then tried my mojo with the 36's.

I now ride a LTc with 150 Fit floats (& had the 150mm rev teams previous) I personally don't notice a massive difference in stiffness & have coped with all the drops/jumps & falls that i've put them through. But I only weigh around 12.5st kitted up.

If you ride with 36's on your 'do it all' bike you will notice the extra weight.

I have 150mm Revs on my Tracer with 20mm Maxle. I think they are the perfect forks but haven't ridden any Fox forks at all! I wouldn't go with anything less than 150mm as it would be too twitchy on the front. I notice the difference when I change to 6" travel, so leave it in the lower setting and it is fine.

Curly68 - surely sticking it in the longer travel mode slackens it out instead of making it more twitchy?!

Any idea what sort of head angle it is with a 150mm rev then?

Are Intense's quoted geometries based on fox forks? I know the rev is a bit taller than the equivalent fox ..

Mine was almost 71 with a Fox 140. Faulty frame though (some of the size L frames are).

mmm, my recent build has 35mm forks on it and is still sub 29lbs Dan...

Get the big forks m8, When I had Alpine and ST4 on had 36s the other 32s. I would feel more confidant at Wharncliffe with a pair of 36's upfront than 32s.

I bet you can still build the Tracer to 30lbs with 36's on. Your old Reign was 33lbs and I never saw you die on the trail after riding all day 😉

BTW, take a look at some Lyriks.

Yeah but your frame is at least a pound lighter than mine Si!

You're probably right though - 36s or lyrics would feel a whole lot nicer in the rough stuff and I didn't really suffer with them on the reign!

I just wonder if trail centres etc are going to feel dead with big forks?

There's enough rocks and fast descents to make use of them out in the peaks mind ..

You could reduce the travel on the 36's, only takes 2 mins and would give you the 140mm you want for the trail centres.

Though you should ask yourself, is 20mm 'really' going to make much different either way? I would rather have the stiffer chassis of the 36 over the 32's and you could still run them at 140mm, and weight difference, its negligible in the grand scheme of things 😉

Sorry - Hijack

Revs at £300 would be very nice. Any chance of a linky pls?
I've just about killed my Fox 32 Floats within 15 months 😕 and those would be ideal replacement.
Revs for me next time I think.

36s or Lyrics every time. Especially given the intended usage is going to be rock bashing in the Peaks - high speed stability and tracking is important, ultimate nimbleness far less so. If it rides anything like my Uzzi, it'll be capable of generating some pretty scary speeds and the extra solidity and slackness inherent in the big forks will be much appreciated.

My tracer weighed in at 27.5lbs (it is a small though) with 36's and mostly xt stuff mavic st wheels. You could also run a little more sag on a 160mm fork as well.

And you're right - it will be mostly used for thumping into big rocks so I guess a bigger fork makes sense!

simon - yeah that's a good point. I sometimes just get carried away with people going on " blah 160mm travel as much as DH bikes from a few years back, blah what's the point blah"

TheSwede - cool, I'd be interested certainly to hear what it comes in at!

TheSwede - can you let me know if yours came with a grease gun.

Mine hasn't 🙁

(it's also missing the Easton sticker from the seat tube damn it!)

They did originally, then started shipping without the grease guns. My two Intenses received after last December came without the guns.

Mine had 36s with a CK headset and the HA was 67 I think. Lovely bike, gone but not forgotten.

Mine did not come with a grease gun and I had a little whine. They said they would send me one out. It came with a little adaptor so you can use any grease gun as ropey says. 😥

Yeah, I got annoyed by the ~71 HA with the Fox 140 and got a 36. Things where better with the HA at 69, but still it was ridiculously steep for a bike with that kind of travel (seat angle was off by as much). This was with a flush headset.

Don't really know what was up. They never admitted to the problem, rather they said that the HA listed on their web page is incorrect, and all tracers are actually one degree steeper then listed (which means they should be 68.5 with a Fox 36). I know that's bollocks as I measured two mediums and they where very close to the listed angles.

They sent me an Uzzi so can't really complain, but it did not give a lot of confidence on their way to resolve problems. Also the Uzzi came with the wrong shock and stickers and took over 6 months.

Can anyone recommend a decent iPhone angle measuring app?

I realise they're not hugely accurate but I'd be interested to see all the same..

Yeah, you can calibrate it. In settings choose .1 accuracy.

But I'd need something of a known angle to calibrate it against wouldn't I?

Either the floor if straight, or if unsure: measure, turn bike 180 degree and measure again. Calculate average...

Rode the Lyriks tonight Dan.. every bit as nice as 36's.. maybe even a bit more "stand up" if that makes sense... charged through big rocky bits when I got the line wrong.. very very pleased with them.
