[Closed] Insuring expensive bikes

[#1561667]

I discovered last night that MoreThan's "limit per cycle" in their contents insurance tops out at £2,500. As I am fortunate enough to have an expensive bike, I was wondering who I should look at for getting my bikes insured?

My contents insurance renewed last month so I'm not particularly interested in changing that.

Sure it's just the one, Chris? 😉

Who are you with that gives £2500?
I had a knightmare finding home insurance that went over the £450 mark. I guess fortuneatly for me £2500/bike covers both of mine.

Cheers

Rusty

I'm with Elephant and everything over £500 has to have valuations or receipts.

Rusty Mac, I have my contents insurance with MoreThan. Their bike cover is limited to £2,500 per cycle. They haven't asked me to register my bikes with them or provide proofs of purchase or valuations.

I found M&S cheap, and as above, covered for up to £4k/item.

depends on massive CK - for me other companys without bikes were like 100 quid ....

for the bikes - we have 10k between us invested (or should that be squandered) in bikes and the fact m&s wanted 350 quid to cover contents plus bike plus accidental damage seemed a no brainer to me

+1 for M&S contents insurance.

Any one item covered up to £4.5k. We pay around £28 a month for 'Away from home' cover, that includes Europe i think. Considering we have 3 very expensive bikes the price is pretty fair.

M&S here too. They were quick to payout when my buddy had all his bikes nicked (approx £17k!), so I'll be sticking with them. My premium is about £150 a year for premier contents, no brainer.

My bike was included in my Zurich Household insurance, after a mishap with my bike I am now getting a new Turner with a shiny set of new forks along with a few other replacement bits! 😀 My old bike was covered for what I paid but the insurance also added inflation for todays prices hence the higher value new frame.

I'll look into M&S insurance, then. I guess I'll also have to find out about cancelling my current contents insurance too, if M&S cover will me.

When I last looked at changing my contents insurance provider I remember checking M&S. I also remember that one company refused to cover me because I live in a flat rather than a house. I can't remember if that was M&S, though.

Another vote for M&S here. Got buildings and contents with them (with 'away from home' and 'accidental damage' on the contents). They even paid out for a new frame for me last year when I broke my old one. I wasn't expecting them to but they didn't even question it.

For people with M&S already, always get a new quote every year rather than accepting the automatic renewal.. I saved over £200 off my renewal price last year!

M&S are very good but reflected in price.

My contents covers my bikes against theft and damage while not in use...
but went for a specialist on my roadbike for own damage while in use replacement but cost me £60 but better than £1000+ out of my pocket.

M&S were £130 cheaper than my existing insurer, with much better terms.

£270 for buildings and contents. 20% online discount.

Its worth looking at M&S even if it means losing your current premium.

Our full contents with home/away is £125, and as this includes not only mine and my sons bikes but also all my wifes' riding gear, cameras, tents and anything else - its CHEAP.

Sorry for the hijack, been thinking about insurance for a while but can't really afford the premiums (can I afford not to though? really couldn't afford to replace it)
What is there for those of us with a bike well in excess of £5k? (no I'm not rich, that was the best part of a year to save up, and I still owe the parents well over a grand 14 months on)
Live in an area where crime isn't really an issue, never even bother locking my car at home, but I was thinking more of travelling to races with it, and maybe even accidental damage cover?

Get a big angry dog, and starve it. The downside of this is that you'll never be able to get your bikes out of the shed again.

Alternatively, sell the Mojo and buy a Saracen.

We're with one of the various RBS shill brands but they still only go up to £3000, and i have to be honest I'd be a wee bit nervous about their claims process, they seem a bit vague. Also, though the bikes are covered to their specific value, that also counts towards the single payout limit of £1000. So, we'd get the payout for the bikes but effectively nothing else in the garage is insured, which is a bit worrying.

Homelet have my premium set at £27 for £15,000 contents and £1500 worth of bike and they don't care what lock you use as with other insurers who generally specify that it needs to be locked up with a Scooter lock or something similar... not practical to carry with you an a ride!!

get in touch with the ctc or british cycling and ask them about specific bike insurers, seperate policy with people who know about bikes. if you're going to spend that much on a bike don't skimp on insurance

and make sure they are locked to a ground anchor when at home!!!

I've just got my renewal through from M&S, went online to get a new quote, and it was £20 more than my renewal!

Not had to claim with them yet thankfully, but I'm sure that they can't be worse than Barclays were when I had to claim for water damage a couple of years ago (took over a year to settle the claim!)

I live in a flat and use M&S Premium, that also covers all my belongings away from home, including abroad. My premium is £17/month.
