[#1757763]

Whilst I know a few of you might think this is a bit immoral I need a bit of guidance.

I had my garage robbed and now I'm left with quite a large amount of money to spend on bikes, I've decided that I'm only going to buy 2 bikes for myself (Lapierre Zesty 314 and a cheap commuter). That's going to leave me with about £4k to spend ! what I'm hoping to do is buy some bikes and then sell them (at a loss) to get some cash.

With the cash I'm going to alarm/secure my garage and keep some for a rainy day.

So what I need to know is would it be better for me to buy 1 £4k bike and take a hit of about £1k or buy 2 or 3 bikes and hope for around the same loss ? what's going to be the easiest to sell on ? what bikes are likely to sell well ?

I looked into a cash settlement but that's looking very unlikely due to them being able to replace all the bikes.

Any help would be appreciated

I'd have thought you'd lost most on the highest-end bikes - smaller market.

I would assum easier to sell new mid range stuff XT /SLX X7 or X9 than trying to sell very expensive new stuff xtr x0 etc. Assume same loss ish but a 33% hit on that and harder to sell expensive stuff.
Surely easier to find someone who wants a new bike and offer them a % off the new price if you buy it say 10-20%?
Try that in classifieds?
PS times are hard can I have 1% commision for saving you money 😉

If you CBA you could split a whole bike - might sell for more.

Surely someone would bite your arm off for this? Find someone who is thinking of buying a new bike, offer to buy it for them and then they pay you an agreed sum, everyone is a winner. You just might have trouble convincing them that its not a scam!

I'd be tempted to lean on the insurance company a bit more. TJ will be along shortly to give all the details though.

Can you not just request insurer to pay portion cash in lieu? May get a reduction but belive you'd still be better off.

Would it be wrong to put an advertisement on the classifieds ?

I'm sure I can show people this is not a scam, I've dealt with quite a few people on here over the years under Vassagojay and Jason106gti

Find something that's particularly well specced, take apart and sell. I'd look high (but not top) end, XT/X.9 transmission type level, you're less likely to have any really shonky components left.

insist on a cash settlement. you may get a slightly reduced figure but it'll be less than the hit you get from selling on the bikes.

I did ask for a cash settlement but they said that if wheelies could supply the bikes I stolen then I could not.
Also the figure I got is way above what I expected to get !! I really don't want to upset the apple cart.

The only thing they could not supply was a frame that retailed at £800 but they offered me a £1300 replacement.

Buy 3 or 4 Specialized Pitch's in Medium, wait until they sell out and flog them for a profit!

Seriously though if you bought popoular mid range full-sus bikes (like the Pitch) you might not lose much money on them

Right then, just been on the phone again to M&S and it looks like I should be able to get a cash settlement, I believe it's around -18% of the total so fingers crossed.

richmtb, I looked on wheelies website and they only have pitches left in small, seeing as the 2011 bikes are out in sept they might not be getting anymore in stock

See it would have been a great idea two months ago!

Was just about to post and say that you are entitled to a cash settlement no matter if they can replace the goods or not and that they usually settle for a figure around 20% less than the value.
If you are prepared to be a stick in the mud you could probably reduce that to 10 to 15% by arguing that you could not replace them for the devalued settlement!
I would also hazard a guess at this but they should not be able to dictate who you go to to buy the bikes.....I would argue that it was a frame with aftermarket parts that cannot be replaced unless you buy it all separate and rebuild from the ground up 🙂

I've rang M&S and asked them again about a cash settlement and they have agreed, it's minus 18% but still a good offer

Many thanks for all the advice
