preserve your bikes the way they are now, guarantee that nothing would wear out or break, but you couldn't replace anything either - would you? lets say for the next 10 years to rule out waiting for hoverbikes...
Thinking about my 2 bikes I probably would, they are set up perfect for me and 10 years biking without worrying about the latest tech and whether a part will become obsolete (26" wheels for example...) would be a massive freedom to just get on and enjoy the ride.

I'd probably be a bit put out in six or seven years time when I'm chasing vainly after my mates on their 20lb 160 travel 28" bikes.... I'd save a fortune though.

Sod that. Building a new bike is one of life's fundamental pleasures.

Can I get the repairs finished before we start the 'freeze in time' mode. The creaking crank would do my nut in if it was there for 10 moire years

No, I get bored with bikes after a few years and look to change regardless. Never worry about obsolecence either. I just pick something from whats available at the time, and go with that.

This plus several other niggles and finishing a long-delayed build.

Interesting proposition though, easier to say yes with road bikes for sure.

Ten years without the fun of picking out individual bits for a new build then swearing at them in the shed because you bought the wrong headset. That'd be no fun.
