just had my weekly weigh in.............2lbs loss, pretty crap.
i have been very strict with my food choices.
last week i lost a stone, i have eaten less this week cos i did not eat for over 24hrs on a period from sunday night to tuesday morning.
is that the cause?
good news is that i am going out for a bike ride, with my wife, and in the sunshine... 8)
2lb in a week is good, I wouldn't want to lose any more than that. Was last week your first? Most weight loss in the first week of a diet is water.
2lb/week = 1/2 stone/month = 6 stone/year
Good work Ton, if you lost weight any faster you'd end up with stretch marks ๐
hilldodger.........are you my wife?
she has just said the very same ๐
3.5-4lbs weight loss a week is generally safe for a healthy person. As with any diet, see your GP beforehand. Calorie intake and exercise plans can be tailored to the individual human being. We're all different.
Not eating for long periods of time will cause your body to go into a sort of starvation mode, body fat is your bodys emergency supply of food and if it thinks your not eating it will hold onto that fat.
Muscle is whats easiest for your body to burn for energy, thats why body builders eat/drink protein last thing before sleep and first thing in the morning , it prevents catabolism which is the body breaking down muscle tissue for fuel, the best way to combat this is to eat small meals often so rather than 3 good meals a day make it 6 small ones. Your body recognises there is a good steady intake of calories and that it probably wont need to cling onto bodyfat, so it raises the metabolic level and starts burning it for energy. For weight loss aim for around 2000 calories per day, try to get around half of that from protein a quarter from carbs and the last quarter from heathly oils and fats.
But 2 pounds a week is excellent weight loss, depending on how much there is to lose, if there was about a stone to lose you cant really do much better than 1 pound.

No, but I'm free next weekend ๐
Ton, I did a variation of the idiet last year (4hb) with similar results (not as dramatic a first week mind but still a much smaller loss in the second week), make sure you have your treat day and then stick with it next week. You will see the reduction amount "settle down" to a regular amount but the big thing is how you feel and you will see your body shape changing.
What kind of diet are you on?
If its calorie restriction then I'm not surprised you lost initally but it has slowed down. Calories in versus calories out doesn't work I'm afraid. If you want the reasoning for it I will spend a little while explaining but its probably better you find out on your own. I don't mean to be cryptic but it massively goes against what the common thinking is and we are all programmed to trust what we have been taught.
To point you in the right direction its all about hormones, insulin specifically. We are fat because of our carb intake not because we eat too much fat. Anyway. I will find some links to some people who can explain things a bit better than I can on a forum.
2lb a week is the MAXIMUM you should be loosing, remember your aim is to loose fat safely. You don't want to crash and loose muscle because that will only make you slower.
No one knows me from adam on this forum so I accept your skeptisim. But I personally know I can back my ramblings up with pure science and a medical degree.
He's on the iDiet by iDave I believe, which specifically targets what you talk about, anyway 2lbs is still a good loss, you will drop a lot the first week then it will even out, just stick at it 2lbs a week is great and it will add up and you will notice body shape change after a month or so.
Weight loss doesn't happen magically it happens by sticking to a good diet and over a lot of time usually.
But yeah 2lbs is still great, don't get beaten up over it, if you can stick to 2lbs a week you're on your way.
Hi ton,
Don't just worry about weight lost, think about body composition.
Sound's like you're doing great, and if you're cycling and exercising more there's a good chance that you're strengthening muscles that haven't been used so much i.e. putting a little bit of weight on as muscle.
You cold have lost 1/2 a stone of fat and put on 5lbs of muscle quite easily. In the long run , this is good and you'll end up increasing your metabolic rate and losing more weight too.
If you feel good with what you're doing (and it sounds like you are ๐ ) then keep going, enjoy it, and don't worry.
One other option is to track something other than just weight loss, maybe a measurement. I bet if you measured you're waist then that's decreasing. Remember, idiet will reduce your body fat percentage, but you might not see that every week as weight loss.
@ tomhughes yes pls post links interested in what your saying wanna know more thxs
You lost 2 pounds. Well done. Keep going.
It's not a calorie restriction, or low fat, or low carb diet.
As you were.
i did not eat for over 24hrs
this is not actually a good thing to do to lose weight. You obviously lose weight while you don't eat but it sends your body into a starvation response so fat afterwards will be absorbed more than if you ate a little bit.

- he was having surgery, not eating for 24 hours is not part of the diet, before you all jump down my throat....
Don't worry too much about weekly targets as long as the trend continues downwards, there can be lots of outside influences that affect a weigh in.
As above, most of your initial weight loss would be water. Most people have about 8-10 lbs of water that they can quickly lose if they change their eating habits or hydrate themselves correctly.
Depressingly it's also this weight that will jump back on you if you go back to normal eating habits. Well done on your 2lbs though.
"As above, most of your initial weight loss would be water"
What is the evidence people base this on? Would someone not feel very very dehydrated? Have they not been fat, just full of water?
Ton, try and up your water intake. I stalled after about a stone despite regular cardio (10k 3 times a week), increased my ater intake to 4L / day and lost an extra 1/2 stone over the following 2 weeks.

If you cut your calorie intake drastically the body will start to use glycogen. Glycogen is like a sponge and holds on to a lot of water, when you burn it you dump water and see a dramatic initial weight loss.
I doubt a person would feel "very very dehydrated" as this can and will happen if you up your water intake. Something people also often do when they start dieting. Operate on the assumption that most people are generally a little dehydrated, which i means they will be retaining water. They start to diet, they start to hydrate, they start to piss much more often because they are adequately hydrated....combine this with water loss due to glycogen usage, and some poo...and there you go.
It's a recognized phenomenon that happens to people who start dieting.
What evidence have you got against this?

Don't confuse retaining water because your not taking enough in with drinking water helping you lose fat.
Weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing.

Not as much as you think. About 35-400 grams total in muscle and liver. And unlikely that someone on a non restrictive diet is going to be totally depleted.

Opinions being what they are vary wildly. Speaking personally; anytime I've dieted I've noticed an easy and almost immediate 8lb weight loss which is definitely not fat, not muscle, just piss and poo. And it'll jump right back on there in two or three days if I take plenty of carbs.
I remember back in the days when I could lose 3kg in one bike ride. Pretty sure that wasn't fat ! I didn't have a spare 3kg of fat. Oh the days... And it came back on slowly during the week. Don't miss the days of weighing myself every day !
Calories in versus calories out doesn't work I'm afraid.
Can you tell my body that, I have lost 13lb in 10 weeks using that exact method :s
Keep going Ton, soon we will be able to call 100weight ๐
Long time since I covered this so apologies if some details are squint.
Certain carbs such as those in wheat and potatoes are digested in the lower part of the intestine by gut fauna thus increasing the acidity of the colon with their waste; this necessitates an increase in the movement of water to the lower intestinewhich is excreted in the faeces. In addition blood alkaline levels change reducing the water content of the blood which can then be excreted as urine.
Consuming such carbs also increases the amount of gut fauna, without consumption of these carbs the bacteria will reduce in numbers. Given that these bacteria make up over half the dry weight of faeces it is problably a not inconsiderable amount.
Stopping, or drastically reducing, the consumption of these resistant carbs will lead to an initial reduction in the water content of the body. This will not, however, leave you dehydrated as we are mainly taking about water weight being used to excrete. When you dont have these waste products to excrete in such large amounts you dont need the water.
Apologies for any minor inaccuracies but this gives the general gist.
all noted and taken in.....especially idaves advice. cheers.
just add, been out for a ride with the wife, 1st time in over a year.
only 10 miles, and she beat me up every hill. ๐
What's with all the supportive posts? Have I missed something? Seems out of place for this forum.
