[#3541121]

(I'll give it 6 posts before someone says it was my fault......)

On my way to Swinley the back way, pooling along, I heard a dog start barking and caught sight of it at the same time. The trail narrowed near a fence and these 2 dogs came out with the owner attached with 2 leads. I stopped dead in the wide bit and waited for them to pass. Stopped as in put my feet down and waited. Both dogs were barking at me and straining on the leads, but I wasn't worried as they didn't seem too nasty (Lanky white fluffy mongrel type dogs, Retriever size, Setter build) and they were on leads and there was plenty of room.
As she drew level with me, leaving my way clear, I moved off and instantly got a big old bite on the arse. I felt all the dogs teeth, top and bottom, but I imagine she pulled it off me and the teeth didn't break the skin.

I have to say I was quite miffed at this, and I did have a bit of a rage. She blamed the dog. "what did you do that for?"
I blamed her and told her it was her responsibility to train them and keep them under control, and if it had broken the skin I was going to call the cops.
To be fair, I think my main aim was to scare the living bejesus out of her. I did a fair amount of effing and jeffing. She knew she was in the wrong, a sweary northern accent in Surrey cuts the mustard I think!!
2 other MTBers came along whilst I was in full flow (Sorry about the language guys) and I explained that they should avoid the dogs as I'd just been bitten.....

Anyhow, just wanted to share..... ๐Ÿ˜•

I took a pic of the spot on my way back, just for reference. I was stopped pretty much exactly where my bike is lying, and when I moved off she was about where my Camelbak is standing, with the dog in front, so loads of room....

Good to hear it didn't break the skin.

Was bitten the other month, trip to minor injury clinic and tetanus jab ๐Ÿ™ Seemed it was a rogue dog as I couldn't find the owner to have ago at ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

Perhaps the dog and it's owner didn't see eye to eye with you on speeding.... ๐Ÿ˜‰
No seriously ,out of order hope you're ok.Dogs can be unpredictable even when on the lead as you found out-dog probably got spooked by you or your bike. Or were you wearing extremely garish shorts-if so you deserve it!
Jealous of how dry the trails look down there.

You are northern by your own admittance and hence it probably is your fault.

Hope the dog is ok and makes a good recovery after protecting its owner from a northern typer.

I would have taken her picture and the dogs and followed her back to to her home or car.

total rubbish, every dog thread on this forum has dog owner after dog owner declaring their dog is always under control on or off the lead

dog bite, piffle...it was the owner that bit you ๐Ÿ˜‰

Clearly not your fault, and the owners responsibility to control the dogs.

PP - are you a dog owner/do you get on with dogs? Reason I ask as this always seems to happen people who don't like dogs (pehaps it's a body language/smell fear issus :D). Stop to say hello/pat a dog and they will either wag their tail, be wary, or not be interested at all. Run away and they will sometimes run after you (chase instinct, or maybe just a fun game).

I'm a dog owner (I like all dogs) and always stop and pat a dog that chases me if I'm out riding (I know this is slightly different as you has stopped to let them pass).

My only regret is not using the immortal phrase:

That's out of context TJ ๐Ÿ˜€

I clearly stated it wasn't PP's fault ๐Ÿ˜€

I wouldn't be happy if a dog bit my arse either ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Not an owner but my family had dogs, my wife's family has dogs (we dog sit) and I generally love all dogs. I have no fear of them at all
(Apart from the vicious staffie that Andy above owns...... ๐Ÿ˜‰ )
Seriously though I love dogs. Andy will back me up on that.

Its hard to say as the barking started simultaneously with me seein the dogs, but I could have spooked them, or more likely the sound of my approach did as they couldn't see me straight away.
And THAT'S WHY I stopped dead and waited. I was in no rush.
There just no excuse for it. She didn't have control of them, even on the lead.

angeldust - despite you saying that you are making it his fault by stating that you can / should / must do certain things to avoid upsetting the dog. Its not up to the non dog owner to do anything, its up to the dog owner to control their dog end of!

Not saying it was your fault here but if you had already stopped to let them pass why did you not beckon them through rather than moving off yourself?

As you say you may have spooked the dog. By staying still they wouldn't have seen you as a threat where as as soon as you moved off they will be wondering what you're doing.

Also cant believe the owner didn't get the dogs closer to her as they were on a lead (it must have been a long one looking at your pic). If I'm with my dogs & come across horses, children, bikers etc i make sure they are on a very short leash, not because they have ever bitten anyone before but because one is very friendly & likes to say hello in a manner that may make some recoil.

TJ - you are joking right? I really hope so! Otherwise I have no idea how you get on in life, continuously getting the worng end of the stick (pun intended ๐Ÿ˜•

It wasn't what I was trying to say at all! A riders actions may be the secondary reason why the dogs have behaved in that way. The primary reason is that the owner did not have control and thus allowed the dog to jump up/bite. I actually agree with what you are saying.

I was genuinely interested in if PP was 'a dog person'. Turns out he is.

On a lighter note but still involving dogs, I was on my to work one morning on the footpath/cycleway alongside Holes Bay Road in Poole when a bloke and his three dogs came into view. They were not on leads but as soon as the bloke called them to heel they did, I had by this time stopped as I didnt know what might happen had I continued cycling. The bloke kept the dogs under control and proceeded to walk past me, we said good morning whereupon one of the dogs proceeded to have a good old territorial piss up my front wheel. The dog owner and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing. Haven't seen him or his dogs since.

No angeldust - its about attitudes and your attitude is that the non owner has to behave in a certain way. The only factor here is the owner failed to control the dogs.

See this a lot with people with dogs who are too powerful for them and will overpower them when on the lead. It mostly stems from poor/non-existent training (ie. dog thinks he's boss, not the human). Not good as it gives the rest of us who take dogs out responsibly with bikes/where bikes are a bad name.

FWIW, mine only runs after my bike and is never aggressive towards people, plus he's clever enough to keep out of the way of wheels!

TJ; chill out ffs. Please.

The only factor here is the owner failed to control the dogs.

Yeah. We know that. No-one but an idiot would dispute it.

So let's all be nice and calm and happy....

I was genuinely interested in if PP was 'a dog person'. Turns out he is.

I've seen PP with dogs. He obviously loves them, and they love him.

Angeldust - I need to take elfs advice.

However if you look at your posts you say the riders actions could have contributed / its their fault for doing / not doing certain things.

If you tilt your head and squint, you can see the exact point, yet again, the thread had the fun sucked out of it.

Make it madatory to muzzle all dogs in public, unless the owner is under threat, job jobbed.

My dogs behaviour has surprised me at times. I've been there.
You think you know them then very rarely they do something really stupid and out of character.
Fortunately none of my dogs unpredictable behaviour was directed at humans - it had some issue with a pond duck and other dogs in the park.
Normally its the meakest and weakest dog out there.
I suspect the owner has learnt alot from this about her dogs and will give others plenty of room next time.

I also got bitten by a dog today.

Riding through the woods, I saw a friend of my wife's out with her dogs, she pulled them towards here and I slowed down to pass. As I drew level, one of them, a wee terrier broke free and nipped my foot.

I stopped and Kate (for that is the owners name) apologised and said that he has a fear of male cyclists in yellow jackets (for that was what I was wearing). So I put my hand down for him to sniff and when I got his trust, I gave the little fella some strokes and fuss.

Maybe he won't feel so scared next time he sees a male cyclist in a yellow top.

๐Ÿ™‚

My story has no bearing whatsoever on the OP's. Just to all the dog haters, don't get all tarry with your brushes...

My family of shotgun wielding, spaniel and hound owning, fox killing toffs would agree with TJ. Any dog that bit them whilst on a shoot would most likely be gargling on buckshot.

Someday, someone is going to post on here about being bitten by a helmet wearing dog - I'll know when it's happened because I'll see the glow over Edinburgh where TJ's brain activity has gone critical!

^^^ See my last post.

How many of you actually live in the country or are you the city types that bring your dogs out, which shit all over our front lawns and attack our sexy sheep?

I subscribe to kaesae's method. Boot them in the face ๐Ÿ™‚

If any dog came towards me with teeth gnashing it would probably get an am41 in the chops. If it bit me on the arse (depending on the size of the dog) I would probably use my pump as a nightstick.

And before the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou chip in, I am an animal lover of all kinds (except in the cases of those who attack me, then it is a dog eat dog situation)

Ooooh how very dare you ๐Ÿ˜ก I'll have you know Sky was chased in the park last weekend by a Squirrel a squirrel

My theory is the dog was trying to get out of the way but got caught in the gravity well and was actually putting its teeth out to stop itself being dragged in... ๐Ÿ˜€

Seriously though I love dogs. Andy will back me up on that.

Its true, he goes all soppy, the dog goes all soppy. Its quite sickening really ๐Ÿ™„
