The steps up near the shooting cabin in Hayfield
never even got down them before
but down and up the other side today, didn't like it though, it was slippy as hell
yay!
got a pic of them?
I have but they look so tame on the pic, I'm a bit embarrassed about putting it up
they look steeper when you're going down them 😉
PICS!!!!!!
everything looks tame in pics/videos least give us a rough idea going up hayfield this weekend!
🙂 i'd quite like to see a pic, only ever been down one set of steps on the bike... and they weren't steep or plentyful... so everything looks impressive to me 🙂
fair do's know your limits, if you have combatted them and before not, then fair play to you! however it doesnt look remotely steep though 😆
are those the ones down to a sharp LH into and then out of a small stream?? if so amazingly I managed those last Sunday too! 🙂 great day out in Peaks as well
or was it just because its slippy you have never done it and not the steepness? if so then i apoligize for sounding codenscending 😆
I did those on Sunday 🙂 love that ride
right then what is this ride? .gpx anyone please? i have a route already but interested to see another one! please some one post a link to it 🙂 cheers guys!
I told you the don't look steep, and mostly they are not
the tricky bit is on the hairpin bend as the steps are very close together and are bigger than the rest that you can see on the photo
I do realise that everyone on here who has ridden that trail will have done them, but I had some kind of psychological battle going on with them
anyway, no more will they make me nervous 🙂
I usually fall off at the bottom of the descent to the wooden bridge near the A624
the ride goes from Hayfield, towards the camp site you take a sharp left up towards middle moor, the at the shooting cabin turn left, over the wooden bridge, then follow the trail down to the road at Chunal, you can take a number of different routes from there

Middle moor is great fun. Good effort with the steps. They do look intimidating when you are at the top trying to look round the bend. I always remember the hardest part was trying not to fall off going through the stream but it's got a lot easier in the last few years.
For another step challenge try the ones down from Rivington pike, obviously when there aren't hoards of walkers about.
jamesgarbett, I almost binned it down trhere today too, it was so slippy and loads more rocks have appeared since I last rode there.
Every time it rains it causes so much damage on that trail, you'll go up to your hubs in some of the puddles, and the rocks all seem to collect on that descent
ooohh liking this! pics look much better in the sun 🙁
please any one got a .gpx, or just a route map online i can have a ganders? pleeeeease 🙂
Sod the steps. That grassy bank there looks like it'd be a great laugh.
Did this staircase of sorts a couple of months ago. About 200m in total. Two pics taken from the middle point

Where's that CaptainMainwaring?
Dizy, I don't have a route description but the steps in question by the OP are here.
There's loads of good riding in the area. A quick google should sort you out.
EDIT:
Here's one for starters. A good ride out it is too...
EDIT2:
But I'd do it the opposite way to described.
I would love to move to the peaks. My favourite riding in the UK 🙂
Jools - yes I did it on Saturday and some of the puddles have really deepened in the last couple of weeks
Last time I binned it near the bridge it amused several of the walkers that I was trying to avoid riding into 😳

I've never managed to get up them, or up the other side after crossing the river 🙁 My target for this winter i think.
craggy +1 for opposite way around, taken around this by crazy legs on sunday, ( http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/one-days-riding-in-dark-peak-area-wheres-best-for-a-peaks-newbie) NO WAY I would have ridden down Jacobs ladder, just enjoyed the walk / bit of cycling up it; great grassy descent too down to Kinder Resr and then the Middle Moor bit fab! 🙂 must come back soon!!
Ah yes those steps. It took me a couple of years before I conquered them.
"I had some kind of psychological battle going on"
Been there, still there.

Bunnyhop pwning the steps (first time she ever cleaned them)
The first time i attempted Hayfield steps i stopped at the top, bottle went.,.second attempt, straight down no drama
Getting down the steps is fine - they're grit so they don't get that slippy even when wet, just roll it and stay off the front brake, make sure you change down before you hit the ford, possibly at the top. Getting out of the mini-ford heading away from Hayfield is trickier, gets slippy.
The hard bit is riding up the steps towards Hayfield. I've seen it done twice, by Simon from Freeride Spain and Mr E, but most people - me included - struggle to get round the lefthand bit where it steepens, though I'm getting closer and it's one of my local projects...
Bunnyhop pwning the steps (first time she ever cleaned them)
It was my third actually (puts hands on hips), can't you see the speed I'm going? If it were the first time I'd be mincing down like a granny needing new specs.
Owning the steps I think he meant.
Did you ride back up them as that looks like a decent challenge.
Cader Idris, now thats a set of steps 😀
up the steps?
jeez, I'd better get practicing
