[#9722205]

i've got a new 29 plus frame on order for the new year, and ive spoke to my local bike shop regarding the build.
they suggested hugo rims on hope hubs for the wheels, and when i asked over on one cog, most people suggested velocity duallys. The local shop said the hugos would be lighter and stronger,so i was happy to go with there advice.
They emailed the other day,to say to say the wheels were ready, and when i mentioned it at work,a guy said he'd had a pair, and they were rubbish.
so i contacted stans notubes by email, and there customer guy replied saying that the hugo is more designed for sand and snow, and would not be my best choice on a rigid trail bike.
any advice or experience with hugos?as i should collect them on monday.

thanks

my rear rim split on several eyelets and the rims seemed to get dented quite easily

Hugo's are heavier and are Made of cheese. I've always been a big fan if stans since the original ztr rims and crow/raven tyres, but the hugo29+ is crap. Dually rim is good as is wtb and easton

3 rim failures on rigid ss, due to hugos failing at the side wall or splitting

And the bike shop have lied on weights. Stans Hugo 29 780g velocity dually 675g so you got heavier, more fragile wheels 🙂 bugger

Hugos are utter crap. The rims specced on Apollo bikes are probably more resilient to square edge impacts.

Great news...
I have a pair of Hugos in the shop being built up as we speak!

Typical!

Yes, but you're such a smooth rider Stan I'm thinking of just lacing and not tensioning them for you. So fluid an athlete that spoke tension simply won't be required 😉

Interesting comment from Stans'. Might explain why Hugos are so unpopular in the Fat forums too.

Being designed 'for use on snow and sand' suggests someone set out with a very blinkered view of what a fat bike was before designing a fat bike rim that wasn't really wide enough to be useful for fat bike tyres.

Good luck, it may all turn out to be b*ollocks, there are plenty of STW threads claiming products that work well for many people will cause fiery death as soon as you look at them based on a handful of bad experiences.

My experience of peoples' opinions on rims is that wheels are mostly about the quality of the builder. There will always be QC issues with odd rims, but usually when wheels start failing it's more often down to crap build. Cracking around eyelets really shouldn't be happening though.

😯 Wow! I usually just get abuse from you!
Although, I did notice the C'mas tips jar on the counter this morning, so maybe these words of praise have a hidden driver...

Their own marketing video contradicts that.

I've had a pair on my Krampus for the past 2.5 years which have been fine but in saying that I've not exactly been thrashing them.

Found them good in 26" fat guise, but the made of cheese rim edges are protected by huge rubber. On a 29+ the side walls flare out, ding and generally fall apart in record time even with high tyre pressures. Wtb and velocity rims have been bomb proof in the same riding conditions, built by the same person with the same tyres.

Well I have Hugo’s 27.5 on my Singular Swift Rigid for the past year and they are absolutely fine for me.
Maxxis 2.8 tyres at around 12 psi.
Surprised by Stans comments regarding only use on snow etc, didn’t say that in the blurb when I purchased them.
Even though I love them and not had an issue would have thought twice about buying them .
I’ve had Stans though on every bike for the last 10 years maybe and all good so far.

The Hugo is most likely not the rim that you'll want to use in this situation. That rim was designed as a fat bike specific rim with snow or sand riding in mind. It was not really intended for aggressive trail riding and would not hold up as well as some of our other options. You'll probably be more interested in the Sentry, Baron, or Major which are meant specifically for Plus tires. Is there a particular tire width that you have in mind for putting on this new bike?
this is the reply from their tech guy

I’d have grounds for a refund then as i looked at the same video as Rene59.
Just googled it again and there is no snow or sand in sight.

Just been for a quick look through the Stan's site, I was feeling like maybe I'd been under a rock as Sentry, Baron and Major were all new names to me.

I see why now, they're wheelset only. If you go and look for rims, with options Mountain, Disc brake and plus / fat tyre, you only get : the Hugo. I would have linked, but the silly STW parser spits it out because ampersand. 🙄

From what that tech guy is saying, there's a problem here - and apparently a sector of market Stans have decided they don't want (yet) ...

I think you will find Sentry,Baron and Major are bringing out a rim option in a better quality MK3 version.
Thanks,
Max
