I have an afternoon and evening to kill between jobs in Huddersfield, going to take my old cxer with me. I'm hoping for a simple little pedal off the roads, is it possible to ride along the Huddersfield Canal towpath towards its junction with the Calder?

Start point would be near the Uni and Sainsburys in the town centre.

There seems to be a towpath along the canal towards the Calder. I've not ridden it but there are some photos on google maps showing the path. Google maps shows what looks like an old railway line for an alternative route in the same direction nearby.

Short answer yes but youll want to cross over at leeds road bit and then if you want to go further (nicer bit imo) then cross over at cooper bridge as well.

You can ride out from the Uni / Sainsburys both ways on the canal - west is probably better. You will need to come off the canal for a short section but you can use the pavement ( dual use ). Then you can head out towards Marsden. There was a section closed just out of the centre and I can't remember if it's open again. I tend to use a short section of road and path instead anyway.

I have tried to highlight where to go above, hope that helps.

There is a short section closed near Bradley going east towards the Calder.

Technically you're not allowed to, but in reality, yes, you can ride it towards Marsden and it's very nice.

Definitely head to Marsden and reward yourself with a pint in the Riverhead Brewery Tap.

Well once again STW doesn't let you down. I might have been cursing some of you as I headed west for Marsden in a downpour, the first rain I've seen since March, but that mild disappointment (rage) soon died down as I had a near empty towpath all the way.

What a cracking ride, lifted me no end. I made it to the Riverhead tap for a bottle and I'm currently sat in the beer garden at Zapato Brewery. I'd add the pic of my beer but I've not got a clue how to do it on my phone. So just imagine a beautiful evening by the canal with a sun over the valley.

Cheers all.

Edit, I think I've got the photo, cap courtesy of STW towers.

Love the ride back from Marsden and Tunnel End back to Hudds. Zapato is a good shout.
