On the basis that no question is a silly one, it just needs to be asked...

What problems might it cause to run a 135mm hub (alfine11) in a 142mm hub spaced full sus frame (2008 trek ex)?

What kind of dropouts does the Trek have? The Alfine uses nuts to stop the hub rotating, but if they'll locate in the Trek's dropouts I would think it'll just be a matter of adding some spacers.

That's only 3.5mm per side.

Just be careful of the chainline though. The Alfine is quoted at a silly road/hybrid bike dimension - I think around the 42mm mark.

If so then you can use a 7mm spacer on the left side to offset the hub and push the chainline out to a more suitable dimension.

Nope it won't work. EX uses a extra long QR to thread a 'normal' QR hub into a fixed QR drop out.
The alfine uses a threaded axel and bolts to hold the hub in place - won't fit.

bugger.
