I’m overhauling my snotter commuter bike over the holiday. It’s an eBay BSO that lives outside the station overnight, so it’s taken a pummelling over the last year.
The rear wheel had a fair bit of lateral movement and ran roughly, so I’ve fitted new bearings. I didn’t see any obvious pitting or wear in the cups and I thoroughly cleaned the cups and axel before applying grease.
On adjusting the hub though, while it now runs smoothly and it is much improved on how it was, I can’t completely get rid of the lateral movement. On tightening the locking nut a fraction more, the wheel then doesn’t spin freely.
Where am I going wrong? Worn/crap components? My ineptitude? Something else?
Cheers chaps
Could be loose spokes... Or maybe th thread has gone on the axle from over tightening the locking nut..
I'd keep it loose and slightly over tighten thup quick release to take up the slack in the hub.
You just need tiny subtle adjustments.
Maybe something in here may help
