On the home screen, the one with the weather on it, when you unlock your phone, does the top right hand side of the screen go funny, like its flickering?

The only flickering I get is the weather widget when it's really sunny. Could it be that?

yes, its the weather widget thingie
when the weather is showing as really sunny, it does a little animation when you unlock the screen, and the screen looks like its flickering, I just couldn't work out if it was part of the animation though

Yup, definitely is the animation but it's pretty subtle and had me double checking my phone when I first spotted it!!
