Has anyone does this and if so how, the normal practice is removal tool or iron bar and a hammer interface but am worried about cracking the frame any ideas thanks

Carbon frame, i'd advise the touch of a brain surgeon. or get the LBS to do it then you can sue them if they screw it up.

surely there must be an aluminium sleve inside the headtube i'd have thought?

My old carbon hardtail (Trek OCLV) had a sleeve in the head tube and I removed the cups with an old seat post and a hammer without any problems. I was careful to make sure I connected with the cups not the sleeve or the CF though!
