1. Shift chain onto middle front chainring
2. Put rear shifter into the highest gear (smallest rear sprocket)
3. Screw both shifter & mech cable adjuster all the way in & then 2 turns out
4. Pull cable inner tight with pliers and tighten clamp
5. Spin pedals & make sure chain stays on smallest sprocket
If chain shifts up spin pedals whilst slackening cable with adjuster (wind it in)
6. Shift up one sprocket – if chain doesn’t shift, tighten the cable whilst spinning the pedals until it does (fine tune cable tension for quietest running)
7. Shift up & down & fine tune cable tension until you get a nice clean change
8. Do the same with a pair of sprockets in the middle of the cassette, just to check
9. Make sure you can shift to the largest sprocket & adjust the B screw for clearance
10. Set high & low stop screws – you may then need to retune the cable tension

This is presuming a normal rear mech ( not rapid rise)

If it’s a new cable you’ll probably need to re-adjust after a few miles as the cables stretch

oh oh, + if you find you can't get it to both shift up and down the full range then try replacing the outer from the frame to the mech, that should sort it..

Uplink - why on earth would you do the limit screws last?

Your method sounds like one hell of a faff.

Adjust lower limit screw, fit cable to decent tension, shift to set limit on biggest sprocket, move it back to smallest cog, hold shifter at the almost shifting position adjust cable tension until chain almost shifts. Test shifts, go out and ride

I think if you go to the Park Tool websirte they have every bike maintenance pprocedure mapped out with pictures. If not, may be invest in a book such as Zinn's art of Mountain Bike Maintenance.

Smee - if you're doing it from scratch - having never done it before - that method works well

When you're comfortable with it modify as you see fit

Funny that you think Uplinks method is the official one - I have just summarised Shimano's instructions.

Smee - exactly ! The gears come with instructions it's probably best to use them ! (Failing that, the manufacturers website has them all)

Just why would anyone bother with a second or third hand interpretation on an internet forum !?
