MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
My replacement freehub was delivered today, so I watched the video on how to service them, and it said I need the tool to get the seal to seat, but is it possible to do it without? It doesn't need to be anything particularly sturdy, just enough to push the seal in. Cheers for any help.
No, you don't need the tool. A careful tucking in of the seal with a screwdriver should do it.
Yeah, just poke it in- I use a ball-ended allen key but just about anything would do. It's easier if you push the freehub right on.
The only people that say the seal tool is neccesary are the seal tool salesmen 😉
The seal tool is useless anyway once the freehub has been used a bit as the freehub (even my steel one with an xt cassette fitted) gets chewed up on the splines and when you fit the seal with the tool then pull it off again the freehub tends to remain stuck inside the tool! As said above just carefully tuck it in with either your fingers or a screwdriver.
True you can do it with out "the tool" but with the tool it is quicker, easier and does less damage to the seal over time.
if you service Hope hubs a far bit, the tool is worth the money, as time is money as they say.
It takes 5 seconds to do it without the tool, and is very simple. And you won't damage the seal unless you're a cackhanded monkey, there's no force involved.
You can borrow the tool from me if you feel you need to. Just give us a shout and remember to talk to the hub in a strong Lancashire accent for maximum effect.
One of my freehubs never clicks back in with the 'snap' noise. And I can pull the freehub off with ease by hand. Does this mean my seal is worn?
I've done a fair few now and it never even occurred to me that there might be a special tool for doing what is a simple 5 second manual job.
Cheers all, sorted it. Is it normal for it to spin a bit less freely than before to start with? Cheers Jon, I'll probably take you up on that when I change the main hub bearings, they feel a bit rough but no play yet so I'll leave them for a bit.
Is it normal for it to spin a bit less freely than before to start with? you probably dont have the seal seated correctly 😉
You're probably right. I'll try riding it once I get some rim tape and rotor bolts and see how it goes.
I used the plastic bit out of the middle of a roll of self amalgamating tape which happened to be the right size.
I've always used my fingers. The trick to getting it in easily is the same as getting tight tyre beads into the well of a rim.
the proper tool seats it properly - First time I used a small screwdriver easier enough but I evidently did not push The seal in far enough as the free hub did not click in properly and I almost wrecked my mech 😳
