Seem to be riding my new one more of late, feel alot fitter for it.
how often do you ride yours and how for how long?do you push yerself to the limit on the climbs?
I ride mine all the time these days as it's only bike i have, don't find the climbs to bad always enjoyed climbing anyway but now with the lack of gears i ain't got no choice pedal or get off, done Ae couple of weeks back and didn't feel i was any slower and yep i do feel a lot fitter, and in these muddy conditions no chain/gears/shifters problems...... ah bliss just pedalling along
Ride mine everyday 🙂 on and off road
Tend to be able to spin fast so run 32 - 18 can get up anything on that, havnt found many hills that are to steep to get up yet!
Have to work hard, but its worth it!
ive gone from 32-18 to 32-16 alot harder for me round here.but reackon will pay off, planning on riding mine prob 75% of winter methinks.
only bikes ive got are both ss, love em except after long layoffs and even then they're still fun
Tend to ride SS 90% of the time at the moment.
fontmoss do you run both bike the same?
At least once a week, sometimes on an alternative, off road commute. Every time I ride it, it never fails to induce a big grin. 😀
do i ride both the same? gearing wise you mean? if so then no, i have a cross bike which i ride to uni and have been riding in its own right until i got the flu recently, its set up 42:16 which is fine but prob too big for any cross races. Also my 29er mtb which has been set up as 34:18 for the last year but im changing to 34:19 because im not riding nearly as much after going back to uni 🙁
EDIT: youre welcome to try both/either if you're near derby
Commuter (44:16) - every day
Off road (32:17) - most of the time, as the geared full sus always seems to be in pieces! Usually try to push quite hard on the climbs, but I did get off and walk a tiny bit at the top of Lady's edge today 🙁
once a month or so at this time of the year.
2 night rides a week plus weekends on the ss if riding at cannock or macc forest side of the peak district. Bigger/longer (5 hours plus rides) in the mountains I use my geared boingly. Every climb should be hit as hard as possible on a SS, if you get to the top and need to vomit your lungs up and wave them above your head to get more oxygen, then you're at just about the right pace 😀
We always have a "too steep to singlespeed" rule that can be invoked once per ride. Once used you have to attempt everything, even if it results in complete stalls and falling off sideways because ya spds will not release under pressure. It soon makes you fitter and/or rather bruised!!
50:50
Had a nice ride at Afan, Penhydd and the Wall back-to-back, quite tough as I don't normally take the SS outside of Bristol...
Must say I quite enjoyed passing a big group of expensive full suss owners all scratching their heads at the Graveyard slab section and skipping through with a cheery nod 😀
Did miss my full susser by the end though, bloody knackered and battered lol
At the moment 90% of the time. But I have just got a new Simple! Took it to the Marin trail and Penmachno next week and did work hard!
Running 33x17 at the moment.
Every time I go mountainbiking/bmxing or racing cyclocross (put gears on the commuter.Normal rides are 60-90k on the mtb.Aim to keep heart rate under 85% of max when climbing.
i ride SS most of the time now, (several times a week). i rode coed y today which i always use to see as prime ground for my full suss but really enjoyed it on my chameleon.
No one realy rides a singlespeed.
They just talk about it and post pictures of them on internurd forums in a desperate attempt to get some attention.
explosioninaspaghettifactory- you are welocme to come riding with us on our non-existant single speeds. infact you may have hit upon a fantastic idea, the only bit that needs changing are brake pads and not actually taking it out will save a fortune. Can we also start a new thread " what ss ratio for being propped up in a garden shed?" 😀
At this time of the year I am exclusively on my SS for off roading. Where I live there aren't that many hills to climb but once a month I head to the real mountains where some of the climbs are 1 hour plus and I am a stubborn sod when it comes to walking with the bike (I hate doing it). I always use the same 32:16 as I am too lazy to change for different places. So at the moment I do around three night rides a week then one ride at the weekend on my SS and the rest of the time on my cyclo-cross bike.
tazzy. You can come for a ride with me at SSEC10
Or we could just talk about it and post pics of us not riding because that's what ssers do....
Not often enough, so I put an Alfine on it. But now I miss SS 🙁 Still have rear wheel and some other bits, so will likely build another up at some point.
I miss my SS 🙁
97 Kona Fire Mountain with P2 forks, TI quill stem and Forge Singaltor. I really do wish i never sold it. I used to ride it equally 50:50 with my geared bike though the year but would go though periods of using one more than the other.
I rode my fixed SS today and fell off onto the pavement because I couldn't clip out. I looked very stupid!
I go through phases. ONly ridden it once in the past three months, but then I have just got two new bikes that I've been riding in preference. At one point I rode nothing but SS for ages. Have done 42 miles on it and felt fine, but not for some years. I view it as a challenge, there's only one local climb that I've ridden geared that I've yet to conquer SS: and given that I've not always cleaned it geared and am only 20yards short, I'll have it one day. £32:16, the gear of champions, of course.
I'm assuming ssec is in the forrest of dean cos they could'nt think of anywhere with proper hills.............
Almost all local rides which is most of the time. Almost never for 'proper' rides or racing.
Pretty much every day as it's my main ride to work bike. Now winter's coming in I'll put some air in the tyres on my SS Kona Sutra, 'cos that's got mudguards on, which make a difference riding through the salty crap that gets washed into the gutters. Occasionally I'll get bord and ride the Inbred 567 or the Remedy for the fun of using a 160mm travel bike for commute duties, but soon go back to a lightweight rigid. Actually, the Sutra's bloody heavy for a skinny tyred bike, but it's built like a brick outhouse, and takes any amount of abuse.
do you push yerself to the limit on the climbs?
Nah,s/s'ers just push their bikes on climbs.
Too right. They're hard work.
Rorschach.
We're running it in the FoD because it's a great place for a big ride and party. 😉
You never mentioned partying...I thought we were just gonna stand around admiring pictures of us not riding and talking..........
ssstu, are fat ssr's allowed to enter that forest of dean thing.... 😉
You can just stand around if you want.
We'll all be partying though. 8)
Whoo hoo!
Ton.
Everyone's welcome mate.
nice one matey............might have to buy a need bike for it then.... 😉
Much more than my fs geared bike, thats only seen the light once in the last 2months where the ss gets out about twice a week.
I've never ridden a singlespeed more than 103 miles in one go.
🙂
Which one? My Pomp has been SS this year because I've used it more offroad then it's previous road commuting when it was fixed. My Inbreds are SS (I have 2, one is for sale). So: every day, sometimes 2 SS bikes per day!
I recently got a bit into full-sus bikes, change from a previous "not for me" attitude, and you need gears on those beasties. But on a rigid/hardtail? No, you don't.
And races with beer in are very good.
al.
there's only one local climb that I've ridden geared that I've yet to conquer SS:
Last bit of the climb up to the fox?
Once a week for around 4 to 5 hours
Not enough really
explosion- I'll be there, that looks ****in ace!! 😀
5 times a week on my Fixed Pompy and not often enough on my Genesis.
Daily commute on road/towpath - all year round. Run 40:15 on that.
Not enough riding on other bike which is 32:16 - purely due to time constraints, young family and other commitments.
Geared bike not been used for couple of years and is gathering dust.
