How often do you clean your helmet?

Bike helmet obviously 😆

My wife thinks I'm odd that I take mine into the shower for a good rinse every couple of rides.

I've pointed out that if I didn't it'd probably start attracting flies.

I used to just wash the pads, but the straps get salty and dirty, so a rinse in the shower seemed an obvious solution. Or am I weird?

every ride... if you'd seen me sweat, you'd know why.

That is weird, but also quite sensible. Now I'm wondering if I should do the same or just judge you for doing so.

So confusing.

I never used to, and then wondered why acid rain appeared to be pouring into my eyes when it is either wet or I was sweating profusely.

A mate does what you do, sounds eminently sensible. When I get hints of the above, I take the foams out and wash them.

yes, often showered in it, and take out the foams and wash them in a delicates bag along with all the other gear, especially in the summer.

Every time I shower. I find it otherwise can sometimes get a bit itchy and need adjusting at inconvenient/embarrassing moments.

I'm in the other camp, don't think I've ever washed my helmet but I do generally wear a buff too that does get washed after every ride. My other helmet gets washed after every ride though 😉

It's never occurred to me, so I've never washed mine.   I might wipe dried mud off the back once a year maybe.

My current helmet also has sticky residue on the front from where race numbers were stuck after events or races.

Bike & biking clothes get a clean. Helmet and shoes do not🤷‍♀️

I don't sweat, however, I also don't like pizza.*

*Either, neither, or both of those statements may be untrue. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Usually when I start thinking I can smell someone's been muck spreading on all the fields I'm passing.

Maybe once a year or so 🤣

If I take the hosepipe to the bike, I do the helmet as well, light pressure and no soap,

Every time I cycle in the rain. Mother Nature helps me. Last Tuesday was the last time.

I get horrible flaky dermatitis if I don't, so it comes in the shower with me; - washed in excess shampoo lather. Mint and Tea Tree at the moment.

I pop mine on a quick 30'c wash cycle every few months, I always remove the visor though and so far so good!

I give mine a quick hose down every few rides, or run it under the outside tap. I'm a sweaty bastard so they need rinsing pretty often.

Regularly wash the pads. Got a spare set I take on rides with a lunch break so I never have to put sweat soaked pads back against my melon.

Never done the helmet though, maybe I should.

Ionic+ (with antimicrobial silver) pads mean I've never washed mine and it still smells fine.

About 50/50 so far then.

I wouldn't want to sniff some of you dirty so and so's helmets 😘😆

Once you think about how much sweat soaks into the lining and straps then you'll not be able to not think about it!

I didn't wash mine for years, but once I thought about it I couldn't not! 😬

Can’t recall ever washing one. Isn’t that what rain is for?

Nope, Im fine not washing it as its never caused any issue to me or the helmet. And on your other point, if it did smell, I'd agree that I would wash it but it never noticably has...not once have I put one on thinking 'thats a bit ripe'

I'm obviously a stinky sweater 🤷‍♂️ mine definitely smells if I don't rinse it relatively often.

I sweat a lot. In fact I sweat so much that I wear a buff every time I ride. But even with all of that, I only wash my helmet when it smells. Generally, that’s only once a year or so. That sound yuck when I read other comments on here. But I never think of watching it unless it smells bad.

I can't imagine anyone owning a cycling helmet which smells unpleasantly of body odour.

I have occasionally cycled behind an unsociable bashtard who has had issues with their armpits, but I don't ever recall thinking "jeezus I have just had a whiff of that geezer's head".

Pretty much after every ride. I find the pads still disintegrate after a few months use and need replacing.

Never washed mine.  Don't use deodorant on my head either 😄 I do leave it somewhere where it will dry out though so all the padding doesn't stay wet for too long after a ride.

Once a year whether it needs it or not* I just remove the pads and wash them in a sport wash or soap flakes.

* Actually, I couldn't swear to it being that frequently.

I'd like to wash it every few rides, but the velcro dots that hold the pads in place aren't very secure so I have to do some fixing every time I take them out.

Do any of you wash the helmet as one piece in the shower or a bucket? If there's no harm and it can dry in a day or two then I'll probably start doing that.

Yep, that's what I do. Rinse in the shower, squeeze the pads out, and hang it up in the utility room afterwards. Pretty much dry the following day.

I have about 4 helmets and swap them around regularly. Never ever washed one though…

my rational is it’ll be no sweatier than my head when I’m out on a ride..

Never even considered it before now! 🤯

But a quick rinse in the shower occasionally now makes sense 👍

Seriously though, my cycling helmets are more air than they are helmet. They don’t get smelly. Ski helmets, on the other hand… Oof. I suspect they have closable vents so you can keep the smell contained when in gondolas and télécabines.

Most rides I finish looking like I’ve had a shower, but I never wash my helmet. It’s normally still wet when I use it again.
