A NBD post here got me thinking. For me, it's not many!

1990 - A 10-speed Falcon MTB. £155
1992 - Coventry Eagle Mezzo with raised chainstays and 18 gears. Stolen 3 months later. £220
1993 - British Eagle MTB with 200GS, small frame and a seatpost taller than the BT tower. £250
1994 - Rigid Giant CFM3 with Deore LX. One of the great loves of my life so far. £450 in a sale. Rode it daily until...
2022 - a Cannondale Tesoro Ebike, due to long COVID. £2200.

I still do want to buy a slick gravel bike one day, if I recover fully. Maybe for my 50th...

All of my bikes were bought brand new, most warranties are only valid for the original owner.

2001 Specialized Rockhopper Pro

2020 Specialized Diverge Carbon

All new, bar a XC FS MTB for MrsF (via a mate and a bargain) and a CX bike I bought recently.

Only five new and four I still have. Sold one.

Hmmmmm. As an adult....

1) Apollo Equito around '95 bought from Halfords in Hayes with a mate's staff discount. Nicked in early 2000 from a bike shed at uni. Replaced with a load of spare bits from here there & everywhere.

2) 2001 Stumpjumper FSR - not sure if this counts as it was bought "2nd hand" from Leisure Lakes, Daventry. BUT, it had been purchased, ridden once & sold back to the shop as the original owner had some kind of heart issue. So, £400 cheaper than RRP with a disc brake upgrade and only ridden once, so virtually brand new.

3)2010 Stumpjumper FSR.
3a) - bought an brand new Inbred frame & stuck the bits off the '01 Stumpjumper onto it - so new frame, not new bits

4) 2013 (or thereabouts) - Carraro D'Ambiez road bike - a bit shit & now resides on turbo trainer. Fine to dip my toes into the road bike experience.

5) 2023 - Sonder Camino

I bought a 2nd hand Inbred frame many moons ago. Everything else has been new, whether frame-only or complete bike.

All my bikes have been bought new, but I tend to sell on if I'm not going to ride it rather than hang onto them.

2006 Orange P7 (sold)

2014 Whyte Suffolk (stolen)

2015 Whyte G150 (sold)

2018 Parlee Altum Disc

2020 Mason Bokeh

Most of them have been new really. Only the lads bikes have been 'used' and the used ones came from a trusted source. I did buy a used G170, which i sold to a mate and i still see him regularly out riding it 🙂

Bikes... 198? something .. then eMTB last year.
I had 2 new frame between then but one was £50 and the expensive steel one £300 (I'd already decided not to buy as it was £300 and £26 delivery but the free delivery convinced me)

Most have been new, only used bikes I’ve bought have been when the deal was too good to miss.

Was very fortunate that I was sponsored by a manufacturer; even though I was rubbish we still managed to get a good deal.  Had nothing to do with ability, just being in the right place at the right time. Kit was free, wheels, tyres and finishing kit were insanely cheap but bikes we had to buy at cost (so the cost for the manufacturer to import the bike to the UK, anywhere between 50% and 60% reduced from RRP). I still get a good deal, last bike I bought from them I got 30% of the price.

But the downside is this has limited to me only riding bikes from the same brand. I did try to buy a new bike from another brand but the process just wasn’t the same as buying from folk who already know me and are incredibly friendly and flexible with the sale.

One of my second hand bikes was the manufacturers “model” bike that was used for photoshoots. I got that for pretty much next to nothing. Was a £10k bike and I paid less then £2k. And I still miss that bike.

Probably around half I reckon. More so nowdays as having the backup of a warranty is useful.

I’ve had very few new bikes, had an Apollo Kalamunda in about 1992, Giant Boulder in 1996, Vitus Zenium in 2019 and On-One Big Dog in 2022.

I’ve had about 40 bikes since 1996, maybe more, I’ve built some new bikes with probably 95% new components but there is always something, even if a saddle, that’s second hand.

3 of my 4 current bikes are second/third/fourth/fifth-hand frames with components swapped from outgoing frames. Last complete new bike was in 2018 (a too-good-to-miss Intense Carbine with 40% off) and I swapped most components for existing stuff I had before getting the tyres dirty.

I've only bought a few new complete bikes in my lifetime: I'm a fussy bugger and don't tolerate 'stock' bikes 🙂

I also couldn't afford my current bikes at what they'd cost new - portraying a lifestyle waaaay beyond my means...

11 brand new complete bikes in the last 20 years. Probably a similar number of frames and/or second hand bikes and frames.

Nearly all road or commuter bikes. Last MTB was 2004

1995 Univega Alpina 505, my first proper MTB, 969 double butted frame, so flexy the wheel touch the stays when I was sprinting, but had that amazing steel feel.

1998 Marin East Peak FRS ( to replace the Univega which had been stolen)

2009 Specialized Hardrock ( 30th birthday present so I had a spare bike to ride when the EastPeak was getting serviced.

2012 Viking Roma £240 budget road bike to go on the turbo

Never owned a secondhand bike

Brand new complete bikes:

2 BMX's as a kid.

2003 GT Avalanche 1.0

Btwin 500 SE road bike or what ever it was

Planet X Pro Carbon Evo Road Bike

All others have been either built up from frames and parts, some brand new:

On one Inbred 29er, Cotic Solaris, Planet X London Road, Cotic Cascade

or second hand either full bikes or frames and triggers brrom bits. Seems I've never owned a brand new full suss frame!! Although my Reactor was barely used when I bought 2nd hand.

1985(?) Raleigh Styler BMX

That's what mine was, not a "Burner Super Tuff".  Mine was silver with black mag wheels

And my Raleigh MTB was a Marauder, not Montage 🙂

1984/5 Foxbat FX1 BMX out of some catalogue or other. Was so chuffed but it was pretty crap.

2006 Starling Swoop frame direct from Joe - 90% of the components to build it up were 2nd hand and it's still my main bike.

Everything else has been 2nd hand or ex-demo at best.

I don’t think I’ve ever bought a second hand bike that I can remember. My timeline goes something like;

1984 - Diamond Back BMX
1992 - Marin Bear Valley SE
2002ish - Marin TARA full suspension
2008ish - On One Inbred
2010ish - On One 456
2010ish - On One Pomp
2011ish - Specialized Enduro
2016 - Specialized Fatboy
2017ish - Singular Rooster
2017ish - Cotic RocketMax
2019ish - Cotic BFe 27.5
2020 - Kona Sutra LTD
2021 - Ragley Big Wig
2022 - Cotic BFe 26 (actually this was second hand)

I’ve still got everything from the Fatboy onwards.

Everything since I bought my first MTB (a Saracen Sahara back in September 93 for my 16th birthday although it was a 1994 model).

Before that I'd only ever had S/H bikes, and the usual random mix of kids bikes.

Plus I had a few frames and/or bikes as part-sponsorship deals from about late 90's to mid 00's so they were always new and then a mix of new parts and stuff transferred across.

This probably spans about 20 odd years:

Carrera BSO but got me to ❤️ mtb - stolen from Bristol Templemeads once I’d converted into a commuter.

Cotic Soul 26 new frame I built up with mostly new parts. Still running, just!

Transition Spur, got lucky finding the Deore build in my size during the Great Bike Shortage. Can’t imagine ever changing it but then I thought that about the Cotic!

Got a secondhand Scott road bike thing during lockdown for turbo duties and the occasional dabble on roads, but that’s about it for me.

Be cool to have a bike list bit on your profile.

2016 Specialized turbo levo
2017 Pivot 429 SL
2017 Specialized Sequoia, still got
2018 Deviate Guide, still got

2022 Rå.410, still got

Plenty of 2nd hand stuff, and new frames built up with spare parts.

Only bought one bike myself, a Halfords ten speed racer, early seventies that I saved up for from my paper round.

Two other bikes bought for me by my wife, an Orange Gringo for my fortieth and a Bianchi San Remo, both bikes have some different components on now, on the Orange only the frame is original, both give me great pleasure still!

an edit! I’d forgotten, my entry into mountain biking was a Saracen something, fully rigid, one up from cheapest model and used all round the Peak District and beyond for years. Panaracer Smoke 1.95 tyres, 24 gears and initially cantilever brakes. Fantastic fun used to collect my daughters from school covered in mud and, quite often, blood!

One new bike as a kid - a Sunn GT10 XL 10spd racer. Black. It was so-o-o cool. All my mates only had 5spd.

Adult? 3 new bikes.

Carlton R531 Racer. Stolen.

Raleigh Dynatech 500 Racer. Crashed\written off.

Kona King Kikapu FS. Crashed\written off.

Everything since has been 2nd hand.

My 2009 Iron Horse 6Point was bought used in 2010 but it didn't appear to have been ever ridden. Needs a bit of a refurb now though...

Ridley Kanzo Carbon, arrived yesterday.

1997 - Kona Lava Dome (still got it)

2005/6 Specialized Enduro Elite

2008/9 S-Works Enduro Carbon SL - built up myself to an almost identical spec with all brand new parts. Only notable difference being Hope brakes

2016 YT Capra CF Pro

2019 Specialized Kenevo (current bike)

Had an old gate of a s/h Scott before the Kona and somewhere around 2017 bought a Production Privee Shan frame that I built up with bits old and new (still got it). That's it in 30 odd years

As an adult -

2010 - Boardman Comp MTB - Sold 2022

2012 - Boardman Comp Hybrid - Sold 2016

2014 - Giant Defy Road bike - Still got it

2017 - Pinnacle Arkose - Sold 2022

2022 - Dolan GXA Gravel Bike - Still got it

2023 - Basso Venta Road bike - Still got it

All the above were bought via Cycle to work - its a no brainer really - the ticket price on the Arkose was £999 in 2017, i paid around £600 via C2W and sold it in 2022 for £550...

I think the Basso will be my last new bike for a while now - as its effectively replacing the Giant which is 10 years old. I'll probably use my next C2W opportunity to buy some nice wheels for the Basso.

2010 Carrera Fury which I still have for tootling along the disused railway next to the house.

2016ish a 26"bfe frame kitted out with mostly second hand parts

2022 Bird Aeris9 which was delivered just as I was slapped with Covid and have only been out a handful of times on it as I just can't seem to get my fitness back, well I say fitness .....

My first set of MTBs were new; back in the 1980s/90s.

A road bike - s/h. None of the above still in shed.

Then a s/h road bike (Allez) and s/h SS MTB (Kilauea). Still got those.

Most recent bikes have been new - general purpose, MTB, MTB, gravel.

I would probably say more than any single individual on here.

When I retired 2 years ago I bought my supposedly last forever bike.

I have bought 3 since then.
