It was sideways hail with thunder and lightening in Bristol this morning so I turned to the Turbo for the first time this winter. After 20 minutes before I was bored and my legs ached too much to carry on. Last winter the longest I lasted was when watching the whole of Seasons during one session.
How long do your sessions last?

About 1 hour, download a couple of Sufferfest training videos, they are awesome.

And hurt.

Are you just pedaling or following some kind of structured intervals?

40 mins for sprint intervals, longer intervals up to an hour but boredom usually sets in before the hour.

I think I'll have to give Sufferfest a go, pain is better than boredom.
The lack of structure is an issue, I do set targets when using it but nothing structured.

Doing a sufferfest session tonight of an hour. Looking forward to it (yes, I realise I need help) 🙂 Longest I've spent on the turbo has been 2.5 hours.

longest pyramid interval set runs to about an hour and a half iirc, fortunately not had to do it since September. Did just under an hour yesterday as return to training after injury and that was enough

Have a look on www.turbotraining.co.uk I find it nowhere near as boring following a decent plan, and much more worthwhile with regards to fitness.

Yay, I've got an hour tonight spinning in Zone 2. Can't wait 😕

Tomorrow will be 10 min warm up followed by 6 x 1 sets in Zone 4 and 2 x 3 min sets in Z4.

Another vote for sufferfest, they really do make 1 hour pass reasonably ok.

I also find that a large fan in front makes a huge difference to how long you can stay on the bike for, like you without a fan I over heat in about 15-20mins.

The other mistake I used to make before using structured plans was rushing full on in to a session and then not spinning down afterwards.

currently spending an hour most nights on the turbo, its not ideal but it keep the legs spinning, will be looking at some structured plans although as setting targets in my head etc never really works properly

Am looking at getting a Tacx 2200 with some semi-interactive Real Life Videos.

Am hoping it'll keep me engaged for 45-120 min sessions.

However, the Tacx forum won't even allow me to register so I can't ask my pre-sales questions ... Gggrhghghgh!

I'm looking at getting a Turbo trainer, can anyone recommend one??

Do you normally use a road bike on them or is it OK for a mountain bike??

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/

I've got the one above £140. Its very quiet and the resistance pretty realistic too. The downside is that the rear wheel isnt fixed in place against the roller so if you shift around out of the saddle you can move the tyre off the roller. I bought the front wheel holder thing and now its not a problem at all.

You can use an mtb, but you would want to put a slick on it though, a studded tyre would creat a lot of noise.

I got a Elite Mag Force ElastoGel from Decathlon for £99. They still had some on the shelf when I was there last week. Fairly quiet, remote controls 5 resistance level. The roller is under spring tension against the tyre and grips all the time. I use a fairly slick tyre on it.

Time sure goes slow when your on your turbo trainer. I got myself some rollers as well which at least requires a bit of concentration, sure is fun the first time you use them though!

I've done a few 4 hour sessions, watched a couple of movies each time. I've only had to resort to it when recovering from upper body injury or absolutely terrible weather.

I must have a high boredom threshold. For example I'm sitting here whilst my GF watches Motley Crue videos and I can't be arsed to smash the TV into oblivion with my handily placed sledgehammer.

I can really cope with tedium. Must be reading all the politics threads on here.

I've been doing 30 mins to 1 hr but not really been doing anything structured. Just do what I feel like.

Still a while 'til I can get back on the bike so I'm just trying to keep a bit of base fitness, will probably start doing more structured sessions soon but for the time being I don't want to kill my spirit in the mean time!

I normally do 30 mins on the turbo.

30 mins of zone 2 work, then do as many 30second all outs in top gear seperated by 15 seconds that i can.

Then an easy 5 min warm down.

20-30 mins for me before I'm dying of boredom! No structure really, just get a sweat on & push hard now & again with a 3-4 min warm down.
Proper wuss!

Normally 45 mins to an hour. Always intervals of some form. If you are pushing hard the recovery periods are over in a flash. The turbo provides a really focussed session-quite enjoy them these days

Usually about 1- 1 1/2 hrs of a structured interval session. However the last 3 sesions have lasted approx 10 mins each as I have got off, 3 times in a row ! Maybe its time to layoff the trainer for a while as I must be suffering from low motivation

Did my first sufferfest vid last night (fightclub) It almost broke me by the end. The bf was sitting on the sofa laughing at me as i cursed my way through it, especially when I said that I was about to be sick.

Loved it, in a strange sort of a way 😀

I started with Downward Spiral. Still love that one (L'Enfer footage - yay!).

They're all good.

(Going to try to make time for an easy spin tonight - been off the bike for 2.5 weeks. Will catch up on some iplayer/4OD TV.)

Anyone using a Tacx 1680 or 2200 with a MTB? Or maybe any similar system? I'd like to know how much 'easier' it is compared to using a road bike. The last thing I want is to splash out £400-£600 and find I can only use a handful of higher gears because the lower ones just spin. Cheers

After the recommendations I did my first Sufferfest (Fight Club) last night. It certainly was more interesting although time appeared to stand still for the second half as I was willing the pain to end.
Attacking going into a 8/10 hill climb is not fun!

Try 'Angels' attacking at 9/10 ON a climb is even worse.

That final 10/10 sprint for the line on angels is a killer, seems to go on for ages.

30 mins to 3.5 hours (the big number was a one off, although i did quite a few 2 hour sessions).

i never have any form of entertainment, just stare at the wall. it's good mental training for the tough times.
