I bought some bike specs from plant x a few months back. just had a study & they're full of scratches. I would imagine in a few more months the'll be that many that my vision through them will be a little cloudy???
have I bought duff's or is it pretty usual with all the mud/grit etc?

Its normal. I try to never wipe them clean, I just rinse them under my camelbac hose and then shake the drips off. I'll put up with any mud until I can wash them.
