please.
Put the gear in 1. Pull the cable, as it comes out of the hub, out and down to release the clamped nut from the hub. Slacken off the 15mm nut, Slide the wheel forward (sliding drop outs for me) to take the chain off the chainring, slide the wheel out. Simples.
That video looks a bit of a screw-up, to be honest. Too many tools needed.
I would just grab the brake cable outer and pull it out of the hub retainer (the bit he points to at 4:56), thereby losing the cable tension.
Then you can just unwind the cable and nut from the hub, and then unbolt the wheel for removal.
Putting it back just means slotting the nut into place, seating the cable and then pulling on the brake cable outer to put it back in the hub retainer to restore cable tension.
And do the nuts up by alternating sides and tightening a little bit more on each side, not fully tight on one side, then the other.
So you only need the spanner and not the allen key or pliers ๐
sorted now boys
thanks for the help.............. ๐
Am I the only person that's had to remove the wheel out on a grass and heather covered hillside, fixed puncture, replaced everything and then on riding off and finding that the shifting is all to cock realised that I'd lost the little split ferrule? (the one that stops the shifter cable pulling through the cable stop).
I was so pissed off after doing just this (and having to ride home in the lowest gear and having a good ride spoilt)that I cut the Alfine cable "stop" off and brazed on a normal one so there's no need for that faffy little split ferrule thing.
No Andy, you are not the only one ๐
Bastard thing
15mm chrome vanadium spanner is your friend everywhere you go ๐
Slight hijack - what do I need to look out for if I want to transfer an alfine setup from a hybrid to a regular frame?
I found removing the wheel was a bugger with my first tensioner but now i've changed to a simpler one its much easier.
Turner guy - Brake cable? I assume you mean gear cable, in which case mine is fixed very firm to the frame, no chance of pulling it anywhere but if you stick it in 1st, you can pull the cable straight out of the hub as there is enough slack.
Andy R / yossarian - as my brazing skills are minimal would you recommend locktiting the split ferrule in place?
Oliverd1981 - Very little, mainly depends if you have the same dropouts on each bike

I just take it off and put it 'somewhere safe' whilst sorting the flat. Probably could order a couple of spares just in case but gonna be selling my alfine soon anyhow.
Give us a heads up when you do sell it, I'm already tempted to convert another bike.
split ferrule ? I have not seen such abeast.
Do all have them?
To remove the cable I find it easiest to put it in first then rotate the cable holder bit round to get the slack in the cable

Will do
can i ditch the rear mechlike alfine tensioner for a simple singulator type?
Should be ok, I'm using a Superstar one and its fine
That video is a lot of faff
Just need to pull the steel ferrule out of the guide and the slip the bolt out.
anyone losing the ferrule cut the wrong end off the cable. The steel ferrule is fixed to the end of the cable, and doesn't need messing with. its the other end that needs cutting ๐
