a lot of newcomers to the sport try it on their mtb's first.

Where is the parking - down near the athletics track? I vaguely remember an mtb race there, back at the tail end of foot and mouth outbreak (2001?)

Just if you do make sure you don't deliberately knock someone off as they hop up a step you are walking up thereby costing them £50 tub ruined,£30 in fuel and £15 entry fee.
