Hope XC (19.5) rims...

[Closed] Hope XC (19.5) rims - max. tyre size?

I'm running a pair of Hope XC wheels with and internal width of 19.5mm and have tended to run 2" tyres but am trying out some Vittoria Terreno XC. The Terrenos are stated to be 2.1" but they do come up wider - closer to 2.2 and I was wondering what would be considered the maximum tyre width for a 19.5mm rim. The bike's a Singular Swift in a sort of franken-gravel bike guise.

They tyres currently seem to work well but it's worth an ask.

They'll be fine.

The modern trend is to go for wider rims but mountaimbikes existed for 20 years on mavic 317/517/717 17mm rims and 2.1 tyres.

Even googling comes back with schwalbe saying 2.5" tyres are fine, and other sites claiming 44mm gravel tyres will result in certain death.

You might struggle to run low pressures <20psi, or even <25psi but that doesn't sound liken the kind of riding you're interested in.

Largest I would recommend would probably be 2.35

But then again I did manage to fit some 2.6 tyres on some 21mm ID mavic rims earlier this year...

In the past I have run a 2.3 High Roller on a Tech XC rim with no problems.

When Schwalbe first released their wide 2.35 tyres, the Hans Dampf/Mary etc was when I started regularly rolling tyres off 17mm Mavics. Think that's the limit. 2.3 Maxxis were always fine.

Great, thanks.

To be fair I've been riding them for a while and nothing's exploded. The only issue really is an odd sense that the rear wheel wants to ping sideways occasionally.

I was using 2.35 on 19mm ID Hope rims for a while. Worked fine but I've now got 25mm ID rims and it rides a bit nicer, feels more sure footed

However, I'm sure it's slower with the wider rims, perhaps the tyre contact patch is bigger and less efficient, or I'm running the tyre softer than before.

I ran 2.3 on my xc rims. I can't say I had any issues

I ran Mavic 819s with up to a fat 2.2 and also got a cross ride (19mm ID I think) running a 2.3 ghetto tubeless with no major issues. I would not go much fatter than that as you'd end up with half the tread on the sidewalls. 🤣

Vittoria Customer Support got back to me this morning and apparently the Terrano 29x2.1 are rated for 19-25mm rims, so I just squeak in.
