Daughter's current bike packing steed is a Vitus Substance. Th original back wheel (Prime) is knackered and I'd like to build her a new one.
Her front is a 650b DT Swiss GR531 rim, 28h, and a SON28 dynamo, centre lock, and I'd like to build her a new wheel to match. Can't decide on a hub, would like to use Hope, but Pro 4 doesn't come in centre lock flavour, the RS4 does. Probably go for 28 spokes, could go 32.
So, for bike packing, thoughts on GR531 650b rim with a RS4 hub?
Love my RS4 hubs, had them 3 years I think. Ran qr on a PX London road, now running bolt thru on the replacement bike.
Incredibly smooth and a lot quieter than my pro2/4 I have.
Probably go 32 for bike packing? I know nothing about those rims, I run five20 which are nice but probably a bit narrow for heavyweight applications?
Bike came with Prime Orra wheels, but surpisingly on 24h speed, front and back. She swapped the front over to dynamo, so original never used, but the back one has gone out of shape, alum has deformed, I think. Heavy use, mind, fully loaded bike packing Maine to New Orleans, Eastern Divide Trail, down the Appachian Trail.
Also considering DT Swiss and Bitex.
Yea, great hubs. I would go for 32 spoke, for the sake of an extra few grams, they are much stronger and easier to true.
Had a pair built with 28 hole rs4 hubs and DTswis 531 rims for bikepacking purposes. Done around 200 miles with them, most of which on the road. Heading to Morocco in 3 weeks for 9 days bikepacking so hopefully they hold up. No reason why they shouldn't though.
My fairlight came with 20fives on RS4 32h (700c). They’ve been flawless including some light bikepacking. The plan is to do some more bikepacking with it and I never considered the hubs to be an issue.
Thanks all
I'd consider fitting a Pro4 freehub for the extra pawls.
For long bike packing things, I'd definitely go with a DT 240s - those things are bomb proof.
