[#4107785]

I'm thinking of changing the wheels on my Yeti ASR5C. I currently have JRA built Stans Crest Rims on Hope Pro 2 hubs with rev spokes. Not had any issues with them but the rear hub has required more servicing than I would have expected. Otherwise they have been fine.
Anyway, I'm considering going for Some DT swiss Tricon 1550's, more for the bling factor than anything else. Plus I can get then for a good price.

I understand that the DT's may be slightly heavier, but would I expect to see improvements in the stiffness and or any acceleration improvements due to the DT ratchet hub system?

Would appreciate any feedback from anyone with experience of both these wheel sets.

I found that the Tricon wheels were not that stiff at all. Noticeably flexy. The standard rachet drive is also pretty slow to engage. With the upgraded ratchet though they are great.

I'm a big fan of DT hubs (once they've got the upgraded ratchet) but not a big fan of complete wheels.

I looked at them, and realised that the only real improvement from a Hope/Stans setup was to go to Eastons' carbon Havens - and even I couldn't justify that to myself...

And reading on the hub issues, glad I didn't. So just bought another (matching) pair of Hope Pro2 Evo SP Crests instead, and able to run differing tyres with simple changeovers.

+ for DT swiss hubs, haven't used their wheels.
saved 100 g with a pair of DT swiss 240s over hope.

got both hope and DT hubs (not tricons tho)
DTs
require specialist tool to swap the drive side hub bearing is a -ve.
just 1 type of bearing for front and rear (2 front, 4 rear) so easy to source and keep spares +ve
relatively expensive bearing -ve
lighter +ve
not as clicky as hope +/-ve upto you
blingier +ve
cost a lot more than hope and spares aren't cheap -ve

hope
no specialist tools +ve
lots of different bearings -ve
heavier -ve
very loud -/+
hope legendary support +ve
cheap hubs and hoops are very good VFM +ve

I got my DT hubs pretty damn cheap, wouldn't touch them at rrp unless I had a shedload of cash burning a hole in my pocket.

dunno what their marketing is but it's supposed to be pretty quick uptake/engagement whatever you call it, not actually acceleration. I got the old/standard version and haven't noticed it being slow compared to hope and shimanos I've used. Drive side bearing apart the star drive does seem a rather nifty idea.

Thanks for the feeback guys, not sure if its worth changing?
suppose the bling factor may swing it.

The 2012 Mavic Crossmax ST are supposed to have a quicker engaging pawl system, plus they've shed a bit of wieght which brings them inline with what i'm looking for, they also look trick.

Anyone tried these?

Eastons have a horrific freehub. DT Swiss have caused problems before with a few buddies. Hope are the most adaptable I have ever used, although they do go through bearings but not overly so. American Classic are not as adaptable but really nice.

American classic share patents and so presumably design with WTB hubs, which CRC (aka Hotlines) do.
