Just as I fix one part of my bike, another goes...

This time, the rear hub. The problem: when off the bike, it seems fine. When clamped up in the QR though, the wheel still behaves normally and will spin for ages. However the freehub is really stiff going in either direction. I noticed it when back-pedalling, the chain wouldn't go through the rear mech. So after swapping rear mechs, I couldn't figure it out for ages, as it's normal when off the bike. I presume I need a new bearing kit. Anyone had this problem? Did new bearings fix it? Are they easy to install?

Cheers

Gareth

Mine was playing up last week and I thought it was the bearings, but when I pulled the freehub off there were flakes of metal in the grease, and one of the pawls was chipped. I replaced the bearings too, though once they were out they seemed OK still.

Sounds like the bearings, but SFB has identified another option, and easier to fix. Bearing replacement is straightforward enough, you will need circlip pliers to remove the inner beaing. if in doubt LBS or Hope.

OK just dismantled my hub. It's the bearing on the outside of the freehub. When the QR was tightened, it pressed the spacer onto the bearing, which would be fine if the bearing was free, but as it's seized, it rubs on the spacer. New bearings then! Would anyone be interested in bulk purchase of some good stainless steel 6001 2RS bearings? Packs of ten for £17, compared to about £2.50 each. Need to get to a lathe to knock up some suitable drifts, as there's no way I'm paying a tenner for these bits of metal!
