Just put a bash guard on my drivetrain (never used my big ring) and wondering if I need to do anything else especially to the mech which I haven't moved although I never click it into the big ring anyway.
Also should I shorten the chain?

You can wind the limit screws on the mech so you cannot accidentally attempt to change up
Shortening the chain on the big / big + a link is a good idea as it reduces slap in the granny ring.
