Have a question about my hope bottom bracket, recently Ive been hearing alot of creaking noises coming from the bottom of my bike, it happens more when im in a lower gear because of the tension on the bike, my m8 said it sounded like my bottom bracket, now with it being a hope bb you can just buy the bearings instead of a whole new bb, if this is the case is it easy to fit new bearings as Ive never tried before thx.

Pretty easy to do. But you'll need to get the bearings from hope or enduro bearings from BETD.
Theres a few threads about removing and installing bearings from ht2 bb's on here, just use search.

before replacing the bearings I'd have a go at repacking them with grease - its dead easy and costs next to nowt, so if it doesn't cure the problem you havn't lost much but you could have saved loads ifit works (does that make sense ?)

You will need - spray such as GT85, good quality bearing grease, some rags, tools to remove cranks and BB, small electrical type screwdriver.

1. remove your cranks
2. remove BB from frame
3. clean inside of BB shell (might as well while your down there)
4. clean BB cups and gently prize off the outer seal with the screwdriver.
5. even gentler remove the inner seal
6. you will now see the bearings - give them a good flush out with GT85 and wipe clean and leave to dry (or quietly sneak into bedroom and blow dry with other halves hair dryer)
7. repack with grease - thumb in as much as you can then rotate the bearings a few times and thumb in some more . repeat until your happy its done.
8. smear some grease on the bearing side of the inner seal and refit.
9. do the same with the outer seal
10. wipe everything clean
11. add a small amount of grease to the threads and refit.
12. clean and refit cranks
Job done and hopefully the creaking has gone.

Top tip - if you can get hold of some replace the BB spacers provided by Hope (made out of that horrible black plasticy stuff - are you listening Hope ??) with some nice metal ones (like what come with some RaceFace BB's) that way you can properly tighten the BB cups into place.

Try a strip and grease first.

Mine was full of water and is much better now. Whill still need doing, but will get a few more miles from it first.

Before you start stripping the seals out of the bearings, which could quite easily result in them being ruined if you're ham-fisted, just remove the BB cups from the frame, clean the cups and frame threads with a toothbrush, wipe them clean with a thick towel-like cloth, then apply a little grease to the cup threads and loads of grease to the frame threads. Refit, making sure those cups are properly torqued, and try again.

You should also make sure that the noise isn't coming from the chainring bolts. A quick blast with silicone spray on each bolt/nut should be sufficient to dampen; then you can dismantle, clean and regrease/threadlock if needs be.

In my opinion, it's highy unlikely to be eminating from the actual BB bearings unless they are also physically difficult to move.

my mates Turner had a terrible creak/squeak that appeared to come form the BB - we stripped cleaned and regreased - but it still made the noise - we did what we thought was everything , chainring bolts, included and it still wouldn't go away.
Eventually someone (I forget who ) told us to grease the quick releaase skewer in the back wheel as that was (not could be but a definate that was) the problem.
I wasn't convinced but couldn't see any harm in it - low and behold it worked.

Ah the phantom creaking noise, I hunted for ages to find mine, did all that stuff to the bottom bracket, rear qr, pedals etc etc finally after much hunting it turned out to be the cleats and the soles of my shoes creaking when putting the power down.

good advice above ^^^

if you havent had it long/done hundreds of miles on it its prob not the bb, re-setup all you gears, check for play in pedals....check your free wheel....etc.

hunting the creak is not fun, hope you sort it!

It could be the seatpost/seat, stem and/or bars...i'd do the BB last as the others usually just require a clean, degrease, regrease then re-fitting to get rid of the dreaded creak and is less time and hassle to sort than the BB.

Having spent too long and too much money chasing creaks in the past I now just live with them.
