[Closed] Hope BB creaking - Threadlock?

[#2836411]

I run a Hope BB in my Wolf Ridge. Very happy with its performance, but every few months it develops a creak under load. Just tightening the cups in situ doesn't help. I can rectify this without fail by removing the cups, cleaning and greasing (Finish Line teflon) the threads, and reinstalling it.

While this fixes it I'm starting to worry that if I keep having to do this, the BB shell threads on my frame are going to suffer.

I was thinking some threadlock might solve this problem, but don't really know if it's advisable.

Anyone know if threadlock is viable, or had similar experience?

Wrap some PTFE tape around the BB cup threads.

Hope BB's can also creak where the bearings sit in the bb cups - what you can do is press out the bearings, clean both surfaces with something such as isopropylalcohol, then smear a light coating of lok-tite on the surface of the cups where the bearings sit, then press the bearings back in again.

As the routine above always fixes the creak temporarily, I don't think it's the bearings but I guess I could try that and see. Stranger things have happened.

Reading up on creaky BBs I'm now wondering if this is a facing issue.

As I read your post, you've got a threaded bottom bracket ? I'd strenuously avoid putting loctite anywhere near a thread that size on a bike frame. Even the low strength stuff will put up a significant fight next time you try to remove the BB. Personally I'd have the BB faced by someone who knows what they're doing, clean the threads until sterile & apply fresh grease. Torque BB to recommended torque.

Yeah Dave that's what I was wondering about re loctite. It was supposed to have been faced by the shop but couldn't hurt to have it looked at again.

Yes Use Loctite 'Bearing Fit' rather than one of their threadlocking products..

Loctite 641 or 601
