Need to take an old 1 1/8 headset out of a 2010 specialized that im doing up for my lad. Can any of you wizened fellas save me a trip to halfords and 20 quid.
Hammer and a drift?
I cut 4 slots into a piece of copper pipe and flayed then out a bit, wedging a cut up piece of old grip in helps give it a bit of support.
I've removed 6 cups with it so far I think, I could do with a proper one now as it's getting weak, but not bad for free!

Old socket, just smaller than needed, and extension bar, plus big Yorkshire screwdriver.
You just lean drift over and it connects with a good bit of headset at a time.
Old riser bar cut in half
Drift it out carefully. I bought the tool as I have 3 bikes with old quill type headsets. Press back in with blocks of wood and a hammer, or use a threaded bar, nuts and large washers
old seatpost cut and flared out.
Spark plug tool from a BMW factory toolkit if you have a 80/90s BMW handy... ➡ 💡
Bit of kindling from the woodpile & a lump hammer
I'm liking the socket route with extension bar as that's all available right now. Nice one.
Hammer and the rear axle from a 2000 Suzuki SV650S
Flared seatpost works really well :-
Cut seatpost in a cross at the bottom flare out stick it in the heartbeat hit with a hammer and hey presto out it comes.
As above, pipe offcut around a foot long with two cuts at 90 degrees extending about 2 inches up pipe and then segments flared. 22mm copper pipe tended to deform a bit but worked. Old seatpost with head removed will I am sure work and I have one in scrap box waiting its turn but I currently use a piece of old curtain rail which works fine.
When I first had need of one I tried to buy a purpose built one and the store owner emailed me back and said he could order one in for me but they were very expensive and I would be far better off making my own. I took his advice and he canceled the order.
I once borrowed the proper Park Tools for a headset swap.
It was one of the loveliest experiences of my life.
