I've just been looking too and Direct Line (Home Plus Package) gives up to £4k cover on a single bike whilst at home and £1500 away from home, this is the best I could find? £249 a year. I am still looking for one that will cover more than £1500 away from home? But this may suit you?

M&S cover up to £4k at home or away if you chose the away from home option. That's per bike, no matter how many you have.

This may be a silly question but not having my own house I don't know these things...

What is stopping someone take out M&S contents insurance primarily to insure their bikes even if they don't own a house? Can the contents insurance also be for contents of a rented room in a shared house and still have the same level of cover for the bikes?

Yep, because it's rented and you have 'stuff' to insure.

@ onzadog, the cover is 5k no questions asked for any unlisted item home or away, nearly sure that covers accidental as well.
They were way cheaper than ms for me.

Too many bikes costing too much money. I really should stop all this messing around every year and just give M&S what they want!
