mmm - what's the ride out from M'cr like?
Only way I can make it to get the train into town then ride out - would have got the tram out from Victoria - heck it stops right by the meeting point but, guess what - the tram does not do bikes......
That said - Sunday afternoon, surely tram = empty : 😈

Also - approx finish time? Trains back to this neck of the woods are sketchy on a Sunday..?

Can't do race day... 🙁

Cheers
C

The ride out from Victoria Station is approximately 4 miles on a pretty constant uphill gradient.

It does take you through some unpleasant areas; Cheetham Hill, Higher Broughton but you'd be on the main A road and it should be pretty quiet because of the match. Preview lap will take less than an hour depending on how many riders show up. I think the turn out will be poor tbh.

@derek - cheers - multimap says 5 miles and, now I think hard I remember the road - up hill all the way from the old Boddington Gaff until I find you lot - or dive into Richer Sounds to watch the match on a lot of TV's!!
However, had forgotten the areas i'd have to pass through...mmm

@brownbacks - would have liked that plan (well, marshaling for you lot, I have no knowledge of this word 'race') - however - the Mrs is away for the w'end and she has our only car...

I rode out there for the sprinter in February. It was fine.

Mike, the preview rides start at the bottom end of the course (near the big asda), not where the races start

Thanks for arranging the Wednesday preview ride. Will be there.

A bit less about the penalties would be appreciated. Mind you things could be different this time..........even the Kaiser has apologised for his comments so just maybe they feel a bit of pressure as well.

Yesterday's run was a good laugh.

I performed a fanstic comedy fall into the ravine at the first watersplash after the campsite. Look out for the freshly flattened undergrowth on the right hand side.

Any parking down by "the tip"? We'll be driving over from work

A bit. No more than a couple of cars though.

It may be best to leave it on Fairfax Road (the usual car park) and cycle down. You'll be there in 5 minutes.

a couple of lads who are riding today need to get round the lap then get off home on time - I'll only be able to hang on until 5 past 6...if you're running late, best to get to Philips Park Road and meet us coming the other way or something.

We'll be there about 5pm I would expect (planning to eat sarnies while we wait) but not sure we're up for belting round at full speed ahead, Mrs NBT's not a fast rider whe fit and has been off the bike of late with illness.

it won't be a fast ride - getting round a single lap in an hour = easy pace 😉

Brill. Will try to park near the tip first, I think I know where it is as that's where we finished the other preview ride.

You can go and play in the berms while you wait. They're next to the meeting point.

Anyone doing it on a cross bike?

The big berm was a little "entertaining" last night with my lack of skill/suspension/brakes. I have a theory that the pull of gravity is directly proportional to the lack of stopping power.

I would have brought the cross bike as it would have been easier to commute on. But due to the lack of brakes currently I decided it wasn't sensible!

I'll do it on a cross bike.
Is anyone coming who has NOT entered but is thinking about it?

Fine with it being a social ride but there is a commercial aspect to this first and foremost....!

I did it on a cross bike (as you know having turned up to wave us off). Cracking ride, little different from the route derek_starship showed us but mainly the same stuff. I still reckon a crosser will win it, but I don't think it's as clear cut - not sure how 8 hours on a cross bike will affect the rider.

Terra, you *have* to put in the rock step stream crossing. That's the main photo location I had in mind! Need to trim back some of the growth on the jump just before it too so I can get a better shot 😀

I took a full blown cross racer type chap round the other day and he reckons it will be close too. He was at a definite disadvantage in Hurst Woods (the gravel) and on the berms but could have gone twice as fast as me on the cobbles.

Aye, I coud hear terra laughing at my "foot out" antics going round Hurst wood. GOing up to there from the motorway crossing was fine and fast on the CX. The exit from the campsite to the stream was the trickiest bit, mind that's not easy on an MTB is it 🙂

If its not challenging, it's not worth putting it in the race 🙂

Correct... and to those who I told it was a doddle. I lied.

Jase told people tonight that the rocky drop into the stream wasn't going to be in the race, I think I persuaded him otherwise though. It's rideable, it's a great photo location, you have to use it;)

I realised earlier how relatively flat the course is. The climbs are all done on foot, the rest of it is 'along' or 'down'.

Just get into the big ring and it all makes sense, like at Thetford.
It's going to be HARD. I wish I could do it.

I thought the rock step was in too! I've been taking people round it and everything!

if you recall it didn't exist when we originally decided on the course.

I think the length of the race will start to cancel out the cross risers' speed advantage. I do know that it won't be won by some beardy singlespeeder from Darlington.

Yep. Specifically the bit before the viaduct steps.

Did you notice the section that I flattened near the campsite stream?

Thanks terrahawk, I had a great ride.

Scared of the steps to the stream though, 'cos when Dezza Starship showed us round, the poor lass in front of me took a bad tumble.
