Brake lever is now very spongy, will a good bleed resume normal order or is it something more serious / expensive?

thanks

I am ok by the way

If it pushed the lever in you may have popped a seal or over extended a piston on the caliper. So either a bit of fluid might have escaped or some air got in.

A bleed might sort it, or you might need to replace a piston seal.

Maybe you need to try some wider bars.

Thanks all - a good bleed sorted it but alarmed to see the lovely pink Shimano fluid was a black sludge when push up from the Caliper end. No blubber involved.

handlebars reset and ready to ride again.

Thats why you need to replace fluids every year or two - wear particles and dust gets into it
