Ass way back over the back axle , unweighted front wheel , rigid forks , narrow bars and tyres what could possibly go wrong, yet we survived 💪

Tyres with no grip, brakes that relied on the word 'anticipate' more than any actual braking power, angles that were closer to a road racing bike than any sensible off-road machine. Yes, we survived but I seem to remember a lot more crashes in those days...

Yep, remember bending my brand new X Lite bar ends (full L bend, anodised purple) that I'd saved up for ages as my canti brakes decided they were sad and didn't want to stop me hitting a tree while bumping down the roots off Skipton Moor.

Back when OTBs were so common that hurdling the bars,  landing on your feet and running out of it was a recognised skill set!

I think the front wheel wasn’t that unweighted as it was so much further back.

Once we got to v-brakes they worked reliably, although with all my fingers

The thing that was scary about rim brakes was that they lacked modulation and they were lethal on steep wet grass as they were locked or off. Either way you were out of control.

I think we all need to dig some out some old photos.

I remember when I first got my Lava Dome.

I'd been riding a big old gate of a Scott something or other. Got the Kona, thought it looked ace. Narrow bars, arse up racing position. Couldn't stay on the bloody thing - wasn't long before it had a different stem and some Club Roost risers

I still have that bike (and in rideable condition...) - I like to ride it once a year and remind myself how far bikes have come... 🙂

That MTB Pro cover is framed up in my loo. One of my few cover appearances!

I remember the MTB Pro cover with a naked Jason McRoy on it with only a helmet to cover his modesty. I remember it cos I got some odd looks from the sales girl in WH Smith and a "what on earth is *that* magazine?!" from my Mum..

I have the Specialized poster of that signed by the man himself at Bike 95. It went up in my uni room alongside Yasmin Bleeth in her swimsuit. Got some funny looks and questions about that one. I must still have the poster somewhere... (Not Bleeth, sadly)

Getting mixed up, that wasn't the signed poster - it was this, just found in a tube under the spare bed.

I remember that MTB Pro cover with naked Jason on it. Strangely, it was the worst-selling issue at the newsagents ever! 🙂
