While the guy filming the whole incident is a muppet for putting it on line I doubt he had the camera there for the specific purpose of catching other cyclists. More so for evidence when a London bus knocks him off the road.

The long and short of it is that there was no safety issue with the guy on the brompton stopping at the lights and he illegally crossed the red light and shouldn't have. Rules be rules people and bending them is okay but breaking them isn't.

Would have been funny for them to have some silly fight moment akin to the one in the inbetweeners movie.

If it looks like a dick, sounds like a dick & acts like a dick, it's a dick. He's a dick.

I once had a similar confrontation, but the dick in question was riding the wrong way along St Martin Le Grand in central London, which is 4 lanes wide and one way. Dawinism in action.

Crosshair is right on the car point. You are supposed to use all the lanes until they merge not create a 2 mile queue then have a hissy-fit because someone drives properly.

(i am aware this point has been done-to-death in previous threads!)

But... have you never seen a road sign (whilst driving) telling you that the lanes merge into one in 500 yards? Then 300, then 200... And still, there is some cock overtaking almost into the line of cones, just to demonstrate the size of his penis, which is such a very large and important appendage?

I was referring to this actually User-removed. No apology needed 🙂

I was expecting a fight, very disappointed.

But red light = stop and wait for green one, it really is that simple.

To be honest I wanted to see the light jumper and whiny voiced toss pot both realise they were wrong, hug strenuously.

Not really my sort of thing but fair enough.

I think it is ok to call the idiot an idiot because it at least disabuses him of the notion that everyone else on a bike thinks it is acceptable to RLJ. It is the idea that it is 'normal' to do this that gives idiots the sense of entitlement. If they think their peers regard then as stupid and selfish I suspect more would stop at red.

The cyclist broke the law.
Now, whether you choose to be selective about which laws you obey and which you ignore for whatever reason, whether through ignorance or by choice, is entirely up to you but if you get caught then all the arguing and reasoning in the world doesn't change the fact that you broke the law and may have to suffer the consequences.

I've got no time for RLJers, but I've got even less time for sanctimonious tossers like the bloke with the camera. Hopefully he'll annoy the wrong person sooner or later.

crazy-legs has it. Just because one person behaves poorly doesn't make the whole group of similar users the same. This earning respect stuff and one person tarring the whole group nonsense is simply that. If people treat all cyclists badly because they see one doing something stupid it's a very easy argument to counter. Drivers kill people every day so all drivers are murderers. The sooner we knock that ridiculous talk on the head the better.

As far this incident goes. He jumped a red light, end of. He's an idiot for doing so. I've no idea why people think the camera man is an idiot. He hasn't complained about the bloke coming back to argue, he welcomed the confrontation. He knew what would happen and took the opportunity to try and educate the other guy. I do the same thing, some people come back to argue which is fine, some people ignore me, which is also fine.

The initial 'offence' was something and nothing TBH but coming back to remonstrate with the guy was pretty dick-ish.

Guy on brompton clearly a dick, as are all cyclists that think its ok to ignore the rules of the road.

As both a cyclist and a driver I see a far higher percentage of cyclists in the city centre that think they can be selective on what laws they follow than I do drivers

Beautiful in simplicity and principle, meaningless when you consider the "intellect" / "thought process" of the average driver.

The guy on the brompton played it pretty cool, I thought the other guy looked more of an idiot

"I see no problem, I'll carry on jumping the lights" Then he drops him, cool as a cucumber, leaving laddo whining on "thirty pound fine mate, thirty pound fine!"

It's london, he probably earns £30 in five minutes worth of work

^^^^^

Unfortunately there are generalisms in all walks of life - all BMW drivers are arrogant, all football fans are morons etc which are brought on by a small minority, but this one can result in a human being going about their day being killed.

People jumping red lights perpetuate the common feeling amongst the hard of thinking, that all cyclists are selfish twonks who don't deserve the protection of the law or any courtesy on the road. It needs to stop, to protect other law abiding cyclists.

Posting videos of it on YouTube doesn't help, in my opinion, either.

Did you watch the same video? Playing it cool would've involved flipping him the bird and continuing on his merry way, not coming back to a set of traffic lights declaring that he "takes great exception" to being called an idiot (poor wee lamb).

And he doesn't drop him, whiney-boy turns off.

I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely thought the law had been changed to allow cyclists to turn left at a red light. It was certainly discussed in the press that they were considering it, no?

My opinion, if it's being invited, is that the camera man is the jobsworth on this occasion.

I think some of the uploaders other vids should be taken a look at. He basically uploads every cycling or driving misdemeanour he captures on his helmet cam and on all of them passes the usual whiny voiced 'slow down mate' 'very careless riding mate' 'patience mate' 'stupid manoeuvre mate'. I'm surprised he hasn't got multiple scars from people smacking him one.

Well from my past experience of remonstrating drivers and cyclists, most of em are a lot less brave when they're not behind a keyboard or windscreen.
And I'm hardly an intimidating looking individual.

TBH - I find the camera man a sanctimonious ass. 2 cyclists, both gits in their own right.

He's entitled to his opinion, but he's not entitled to insult people. It's also not his job to administer the law or indeed lend approval to other peoples actions. In summary he's an ass. That the light jumper is a moron is something that's up for discussion, but that doesn't exonerate the web2.0 publicity junkie that's filming people and putting them on youtube.

The bottom line is that neither of these two people is representative of "cyclists". We are not a race or a homogenous glob any more that people who wear trousers or socks are. And anyone that bases their opinions of "cyclists" on the actions of one or two people (whatever that term represents) is a bigot, not too seperate to people like Tommy Robinson and his ilk.

Finally, if the camera man tried the same stunt in Glasgow, I suspect he'd be a regular at A&E.

I dunno..

I'm not condemning the actions of either rider..

He's entitled to his opinion, but he's not entitled to insult people. It's also not his job to administer the law or indeed lend approval to other peoples actions.

exactly like you're doing now then..?

maybe he IS entitled, why wouldn't he be..?
maybe that's what's wrong with society..?

yes that was my defence when I stood there watching them rob your bike.
he's an ass. That the light jumper is a moron is something that's up for discussion,

I think its your basis for this judgement that is up for debate

Law breaking debatable but saying you act like an idiot when you break the law = ass, I disagree

Yunki...

exactly like you're doing now then..?

Exactly like I'm doing, by not doing it? 😀 I'm expressing an opinion on a message board, I'm not confronting someone and calling them an idiot. As I said, he's entitled to his opinion, but how exactly is acting in an insulting and confrontational manner going to help anything more than getting him the flat nose he's always hankered after?

maybe he IS entitled, why wouldn't he be..?
maybe that's what's wrong with society..?

What, there aren't enough confrontational sanctimonious asses? Hmmm.. I don't think that's what's wrong with society.

It's none of the cameraman's business to pass judgement - the cyclist jumping the light doesn't affect him in any way. It has no purpose to insult the guy other than by giving him a ill gotten sense of superiority.

Who does it help? What good does it do? what positive purpose is there to calling the guy an idiot? That's right, none. Zilch. He's an ass.

Junkyard...

yes that was my defence when I stood there watching them rob your bike.

Because clearly the two are the same. It's a straw man. And an astonishingly crap one.

One is a protective act, the other has no purpose.

Now, if he'd ridden up to the cyclist and said "Someone was knocked down there last week, you might want to think before jumping red lights" I'd have a lot more sympathy. But he didn't. "Idiot" was the cry, and one designed more to give his youtube channel more emotive conflict porn, than to help road users or anyone else.

I think its your basis for this judgement that is up for debate

Law breaking debatable but saying you act like an idiot when you break the law = ass, I disagree

So do I. That's not what I said. Again, it's another poor rhetorical fallacy. That red light jumper, jumping the light *may* or *may not* make him an idiot. That's up for debate. Not the notion that breaking the law makes everyone an ass. Or an idiot.

Bloke with Brompton is a c**k - riding like a tool as well as riding a Brompton
Bloke with camera is a c**k - Commuting videos! When was the last time he rode his bike and had some fun?
Both of them sum up most things that are wrong with urban cycling.

But I am saying that avoiding confrontation for avoiding confrontation's sake might not be the best thing to do..

sometimes I really can't help but call someone a **** if they're being a ****..
Is that bad..?

In paddy's opinion yes..

We should all walk around meekly looking away in case we appear sanctimonious.. let someone else deal with it..

paddy has judged that it's not our job..

well done paddy.. 😆

No. Not at all.

I often shout "DICK!" at RLJers. Only to repeat it again as I then ride past them shortly after the lights have changed! 🙂

imnotverygood, they're dicks. They may or may not know that, but they are, and shall remain dicks.

Perhaps more of us should remind them. Just gently opine, "Dick" as they RLJ.

Regardless of the rights or wrongs there was really no need to put it on youtube, that makes the guy filming a cock, imo.

So the guy on the Brompton was in the wrong, why not just make your point to him if you have to and then leave it there?

But of course balance to the Universe can only be restored if you get your argument on camera and put it all over the internet for everybody to see 🙄

You have no right to judge. You have a right to an opinion. Just like I do.

But I am saying that avoiding confrontation for avoiding confrontation's sake might not be the best thing to do..

sometimes I really can't help but call someone a * if they're being a *..
Is that bad..?

In paddy's opinion yes..

If you knew me you'd know how preposterous that is. Confrontation for confrontations sake is silly and pointless. And in this case, in my opinion, the confrontation was purely for the enjoyment of 'curds viewers. It served ZERO positive purpose.

But let's put this into perspective - I have a scar on face and a smashed tooth where a neo-nazi twunt attacked me with a kuckle duster after I stopped him harassing a young coloured girl. That wasn't a needless confrontation. (If you're interested, the nazi came off worst - hospital with a crushed windpipe amongst other sundries 😉 )

So no. I'm neither pacifist OR against confrontation. When it's needed. And in that case it was pointless! Can't you see that? That calling someone an idiot is simple fighting talk? It's not going to fix anything or help the original guy see that what he did was wrong!

We should all walk around meekly looking away in case we appear sanctimonious.. let someone else deal with it..

It's not his business to stop someone committing a civil offence! How you conflate this with "meekly looking away" is beyond me. The red light jumpers actions may or may not be foolish, but calling him an idiot does no one any good.

paddy has judged that it's not our job..

I didn't judge, I opined. Learn the difference. Although I'm tempted to cut you a little slack - the air must be hella thin up there on your high horse.

you can have a lollypop

Hmmm... I'm debating with someone who offers lollipops to strangers? Maybe it's a good thing I don't judge. 😉
