I guess this has probably been covered and I probably know the answer but - what is the story with worn Fox stantions? I've got '04 Talas R's and there is a shiny worn area (can feel it as well as see it) on the inside of one of the stantions about 1cm x 2cm. It is on the section which retracts when I turn the travel down. Any ideas on what causes this and if there is any solution other than new forks?
And if the obvious answer is buy new forks, then where is good to buy Fox at the moment?

Cheers in advance.

That's called stanchion wear. Caused by dry seals most likely. If they're working fine, and no loss of air or oil, then run them into the ground.

If you want new forks.... Lexs bike shop have talas cheap at the moment, otherwise bikediscount.de.

Fox aren't cheap, rockshox are a very good alternative. Have a look at the rockshox revelations available from Merlin cycles at a very good price.

Thanks for that rickon. Any point in having them serviced?

It will make them feel better if you have the oil and seals changed, mojo will advise you to replace the Crown steerer unit CSU. if you do, replace it with a new Kashima one, well worth the upgrade about 250 including a full service. It'll sort out your problem and give you a very new feeling fork.

Give them a bell.

I wouldn't spend £250 on an old TALAS R personally- not that good a fork by modern standards, you could pick up a nice condition 426 U-turn Revelation for less that'll work better.

(I'm assuming it's a 130-or-thereabouts 32?)

Kashima upgrades are for 32mm forks from 07 onwards due to the threads on the top caps.
The uppers can be replaced along with the lower leg bushing and a full service you'd be looking at about £240 (from me)
So a fair chunk of the cost of a new fork, however the forks will come back better than new.

I'd be tempted to have them fixed as above. It's a lot to spend on and old fork but much less
Than a new one will cost.

Either way if you stay with fox check out how to do the basic service yourself it's easy

+1 for LoCo. I pop up to mention him on here quite frequently as he does a lot of work for me, forks come back better than when they were box fresh.

Choices, choices. They are 90-130, 32's and I really like them so might just run them a while longer and then I'll look up Loco for a repair.
Cheers everyone for the advice.
