WARNING old school retro road based topic!
Im currently doing up my old road bike, its been resprayed, got shiny new stuff on it including a 1 inch campag record headset.
I was fitting the crown race at the weekend in the usual way I fit them (successfully) but it was being a pain so i gave it an extra wallop...and bust the crown race.
Never mind, it'll be cheap as chips...its not.Its about £30 JUST for the crown race.
So my question to the masses (before I go and hang my head in shame at the LBS)does the crown race REALLY have to be a campag one? The original one runs fine but doesn't overlap, (and so keep mud and snot out) SJS cycles show a cane creek crown race one for £5.10 or a shimano one. Can I use these instead (getting the LBS to order and fit it instead of some halfwit).
Depends...does the campag one take loose/caged bearings (I thought they did, older ones do at least)? If so then the cane creek one won't work as it takes a cartridge bearing...shimano ones do too.
Basically...you'll probably need the same part or a cheaper equivalent from campag...you might get lucky and find something that works (though later campag headsets used 5/32 balls in the lower race), but there were never any intentional standards for them.
Cheaper getting a new cheap headset?
Campag is a caged bearing with the cups in the frame, the crown race pushing the bearings up? Your right about the cane creek one being for a cartridge though.
Bum flaps 🙁
