The Specialized shops in London???

I'm guessing you've tried the concept store in covent garden?

Pretty sure these can be knocked out and a normal integrated headset fitted.

Seen a few Tricross bike like this.

I fitted a cane creek headset to my tricross - only mod was at the top where the machining is very deep and it needed a 5mm headset spacer under the bearing cover to allow it to fit.

I did think about this, but that might change the position of the bearing and where the loads are acting. Not sure I want to risk that.
Basically the frame is designed for a Specialized fork where the crown race sits 5mm higher than on "standard" tapered forks from Fox/ Rockshox, etc. so you need the spacer.

I've got a carbon stumpy with that headset - as far as I can tell it is a pure custom part. Another headset wont fit in as the "cup" is bonded into the frame. I've not seen a cupless one with a 45x45 bearing (let me know if someone has).

Its a pain in the @rse as my forks (non-spesh fox) only just clear the downtube, so I could do with a longer spacer, but it needs the chamfers on to accommodate the bearing so you can't stick in a flat washer (from B&Q etc.)

A bit off topic, but superstar just started doing the 1.5" bearings, which are otherwise hard to find: [url= http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=61&products_id=439 ]1.5 45x45 bearing[/url]. Good that they are cheap because there is no lower seal on the headset so it fills up with crud v.fast.

If you happened to have another bearing you might be able to use that to space it, could be a couple of mm shorter though (bearing chamfers might be the same so probably wouldn't damage the frame surfaces).

The "correct" method should be call the concept shops, see if they have stuff lying about ( http://www.specializedconceptstore.co.uk/), if not they'll ring spesh UK, get a part delivered and the concept store (or dealer) sells you it. I found the concept stores were better than normal dealers as they don't expect to get paid for the services. Thats not going to help you get out this weekend though.

I had a bag of bits with the frame, including all the spacers for the different fork options, but if you haven't got those then its probably back to the shop. Unless you know a local machine shop who can knock you one up.

If the London concept stores are being dumb, try the Bristol one, they seemed really keen to help me with mine even though I built it up from parts. Though the mechanic did hint that the headsets/bearings were all custom "hard to find" things. Obviously they'd have to post it if they had one in stock, so again not good for this weekend.

If you have the 1-1/8 to 1.5 adapter and some spare forks you could try that? (grasping at straws here....)

how much 1.5" have you got on the steerer (height)? I spaced my forks clear of the frame by grinding the bearing seat off a crown race to make a fat washer (so it now goes: washer > crown race > bearing > spacer).

I only had a few mm of spare 1.5" section, but if you had more you could stick a bit of tube under the crown. Might not be great for load distribution etc. unless you got it nice and square.

not a lot I don't think, maybe a couple of mm.
I did what you're suggesting with a 1 1/8" fork - leaving an old crown race on there underneath the adapter crown race, but that was a straight steerer.. I guess I could try and find a 1.5" crown race and bodge it, but I'm not sure it would be thick enough.

Theres a recent post where someones snapped their carbon frame and no warranty, he should have the spare part 🙂

Unless I'm wrong - the headset(incl that adaptor bit) from a Specialized Tarmac road bike is exactly the same. Ask the Spesh shop nearest you if they've any of them in stock? I imagine there are more Tarmacs in that there London than Stumpies?

I've been trying to explain this to the bike shops I've spoken to without any joy. none of them are willing to pull one out of a bike they have in stock either 🙂

The adaptor should be available to order from any of the shop stocking Spec bikes. It is not something they would stock normally as it is not a part of "high consumption" as such. All MTB framesets, I believe, should come with one as standard. Some of headset on the road bikes (Tarac, Roubaix etc) may have the same bearings but those frames do not use or come with the adaptor part as chances are one will not change the fork supplied by the company to an after market one. Full spec integration and all that.
