I've got the option of picking up most of a cross bike so would need wheels and mechs to complete the build.
I'm fairly bereft of knowledge about crss bike kit, so what wheels and tyres are good.
Bike would be abused as a commuter with some real hard offroad on some sections. Oh, and I'm quite big at 6 foot 6.

thanks in advance

Some simple hand mades if there's a chance you'll wear the rims, which you will if you off road it.
An easy to replace Mavic rim on the hub of your choice.

So are there cross specific rims, or are they just the stronger dark side rims?

Agreed.

As for tyres you can do a lot on Schwalbes Landcruisers, they weigh as much as a battleship and are more capable off road than they shoud be.

I really like my Conti Speed Kings. I do a mix of road/off road and they roll well on tarmac and grip well in mud, wet rock, considering the footprint.

I don't thinbk so?
OPen Pros are just well made light and tough rims, just lace them to whatever hubs you need to match your running gear with 'normal' spokes. I race on 24/16 spokes but if a spoke goes it's game over. This year I'll be using Open Pros on Ultegra.

However, if you are looking for some bitchingly tough cross specific rims, I can highly recommend Salsa delgado rims. I've been using the same pair now across a selection of crossbikes and they're showing no signs of wear at all.

It's simple you buy some neww wheels for your road bike and put the old ones on the cross bike.

Open pros on shimano ultegra here.
Have stood upto a lot of abuse from a heavy lad
Currently on landcuisers.
Bit heavy but do not deterioate like the light michelin CX tyres I used to run.
