I have a road bike which I have just got a spare back wheel for to use on turbo trainer as this wears the good tyres at a rapid rate of knots.
Have a 12-25 shimano 105 cassette which is relatively new so little wear. I intend to buy to a new cassette to use on the main road riding wheel & was thinking of going for the 11-28 shimano 105 cassette as would add a bit of flexability at each end.
That said I don't want to have to be re tuning in the gears each time I swap wheels & am not sure if they should be just easily swappable or would the larger back cog need a longer chain or alter the indexing?
Apologies for the "roadie" nature of query but majority of riding on Singletrack on an Anthem - honest. 😀
As an aside, if you've not thought about it already, do put a turbo-specific tyre on your turbo wheel to the stop it wearing out anywhere near as fast.....
The indexing would not need changing, but you need to make sure that the chain is long enough for the 28 sprocket. As the largest cog only differs by three teeth, the slightly longer chain should still be fine on the smaller cassette. TBH, having a a chain that is slightly too long is not that much of an issue on a road bike.
Oh, just forgot that you should also set the B screw with the larger cog on and then leave it like that.
