Not wanting to start the whole hemet debate up again, but I was at the scene of a nasty over the bars stack that ended up with us carrying a chap out of the woods to a waiting ambulance.
Point is that his visor on his lid had snapped off and gone through his lip adding to his woes and i am going to remove mine
anyone else had this happen?
I think there are lots of things on a bike that can damage you in the event of a crash, one of the more common injuries seems to be getting impaled on handlebars and brake levers, but I think they have their uses the rest of the time.
Is the risk of getting damaged by the visor, higher than the benefit of keeping sun and rain out of your eyes.
personally I ride without, but I also have a few different pairs of shades and glasses for different light conditions, and sometimes stick a cycling cap on under my helmet as well.
never worried, keeps sun out of eyes and looks stupid otherwise, especially on a full face

I heard you the first time! ๐
I have seen a few minor facial cuts from helmet peaks over the years and have removed mine as a result
LHS of this forum who claims significant knowledge of helmets but whose views are very divergent from mine also rides without a peak IIRC - perhaps if two from opposing sides of the debate believe the same on this point it may be right?
I don't ride with one as for me it does nothing, I use sunglasses when it's sunny...
sorry echo off my visor
I used one until [s]I heard that this can happen[/s] it fell off

an interesting point - its the passive / active safety debate again
for me the downsides are small and the accidents I have seen with the helmet peak were falls that otherwise might well have been innocuous
Have never really seen the point. Used to use my road helmet until smashed that at Whinlatter last year. Then bought a combo and used the helmet with and without visor. Visor seemed to do little other than stop me being marked out as a roadie in disguise ๐ . Then it snapped off in a crash a few weeks ago, so back to riding without one and cant say I notice any difference.
Always wondered about risk of them causing injury in a crash.
A cut lip is bearable (it was a bad stack so he had more to worry about) but just made me wonder if it could end up in the eyes?
Two of the ones I saw had cuts across the bridge of their noses. The peak would have to splinter to go in your eyes and I doubt the material is brittle enough.
Don't the fixed visors hurt more when you face plant?
I had a worse injury from the glasses digging into the bridge of my nose when the brow of the helmet drove them down.
Injuries can be caused by anything if it happens to be the wrong combination of circumstances.
