Possibly heading to the Dark Peak this Sat for ride/camp/booze.
For years our default site was Coopers in Edale but last few times we’ve been the once-great Nags Head was serving shit beer by miserable gits who couldn’t wait to kick you out. So thinking of Hayfield over the other side of Jacob’s Ladder. Anyone camped and drunk ale in its hostelries....good option to Edale? Failing that feel free to recommend somewhere with quality riding, good campsite and nice beers within a short walk....TIA
Few years since I've been but wild camping at Strines was the preferred option, nice pub there. Do you really need a campsite? (Will certain members of the group not go if there's no showers for example?)
You'll not be short of mtb options in Hayfield and I can't comment on the pubs. I'll add that there is nice informal campsite in Hope, at the end of the lane up to hope brink.
I stayed in an Air BnB in Hayfield. The owner was a lovey chap and took the time to discuss route options for us and left us some OS maps. Didn't visit the pub but did buy a newspaper and some wet logs from the newsagent.
The local were very odd though.
Sportsman is just up the road from the campsite, great pub. Or if earlier in the day the Royal Hotel by the cricket pitch is nice for outside drinking. The Pack Horse is good for food. Can't go wrong.
rascal.
I've created an event in the Peaks on Saturday in our riding group FB page.
I can change it to start in Hayfield and we could do the classic Kinder Loop (best started in Hayfield IMO) or a Hayfield 'clover leaf' that loops out and back to Hayfield a few times?
Give me a shout if you're interested (although I am hoping for a 9.00-9.30 am ride start)!
Doing the Jacob's Ladder/Edale/Hollins Cross/Rushup Edge/Roych Clough/Mount Famine/South Head loop - from Hayfield or Edale - not quite made my mind up yet. Camp site at Hayfield requires pre-booking and all looks very proper whereas Coopers you can just rock up. Might be a late decision so that may sway it - I'm sure I can put up with the below-par Nag's Head for one night. Anyone been in there lately as they might have bucked their ideas up a bit. There's a house just up the lane that does awesome wood fired pizzas from a gazebo so that's tea sorted 😉
Dan - the guy I'm going with frustrate you - he's way slower up and down than me and not ridden in months. This has been pencilled in for ages - you're more than welcome to join us but will spend a lot of time not pedalling 😉 Def out tomorrow night BTW.
