Saint shifter + Deore mech.

Is that the new 10sp Deore designed for a wider cassette then?

I’m tied into HG, so not the same issue. You might as well stay 11 speed (ignores price of Sram XD cassettes).

Fortunately Sunrace do a nice 10-46t XD option which is very durable and can often be picked up for about £80.

Last bike I bought new was a Trek Hardtail in the early 90's.
I've had a plethora of different frames, forks and running gear to suit, mostly bought from eBay, STW etc.
I look after my kit and eventually sell it on to offset anything else I buy.
Keeps Mrs Inbred happy and the bank balance.
I agree with the OP somewhat, countered with the argument of design and production costs though.
I personally am not a n X £1000's proficient MTB'r so don't buy bikes that cost that much.
However just shelled out on a custom Singlebe 853 tubed gravel bike frame post retirement 😁 currently being Cerakoted by a mate.

I’ve gone from 11 speed to 10 speed… thanks to the wide range Deore cassette. Last kit I bought was under £100 for shifter, mech and cassette. It’s lighter than 11 or 12 speed XT… as well as being cheaper than either.

Mech with a clutch, @kelvin?

Mech with a clutch

Yeah. There are a few different Deore 10 and 11 speed mechs with a clutch that are designed for at least a 42t largest cog.

Mine is a 10 speed one from an older generation Deore. I’ll look up the model/code later.

Just seen that you can buy the Link Glide 10 speed Deore now… that could be a good bet.

This sounds interesting. im currently on a 11sp never felt the need for 12. Have you ever tried the advent 10sp? I know box do a 9sp that goes from 11-50t which gets me thinking but im wondering if 9 isnt enough gears.

To answer OP - no, not priced out.

Note that Link Glide needs a matching shifter, so no good if only buying a mech.

I’ve not used a Microshift Advent set up yet. Will get a go on a Cotic Demo bike fitted with one soon to check it out.

the advent x stuff looks very interesting.

when i replaced my cassette and chain recently i was pondering the advent x cassette with 11 speed mech and 10 speed shifter, which i believe work together.

i dint get around to testing that out, didn’t want to order blind and panicked that the deore 11-51 i’d been eyeing would go out of stock.

Just fitted Advent X 10 speed to my scandal. So far so good, feels like quality kit. Shifter is maybe a bit bulkier than I'm used to but otherwise ok. Can't comment on longevity yet.

I was priced out around 2008

Through choice

There was no reason to follow the arms race

Riding about on my on ones to this day is still fun though

PSA for those being priced out, the lockdown bikes are appearing on the market.

Bought a £1k 2020 hardtail for £360 on ebay this week. Ridden once. Tellingly the seller had a matching one for his wife and garmin 830 for sale, again, used once.

Top tip is to include the middle class areas in your search area, this one came out of a gorgeous South West London townhouse.

happy hunting!

now, must be plenty of paddleboards about to hit the market...

It's not about the number of gears, but the spread - and do they go low enough for your riding/fitness.

Advent X looks like a great product.

The cassette (apparently only 424g) would probably also go well with a 10sp XT shifter and one of the wider range Deore mechs.

Yes, but is at actually sold anywhere (mech, shifter, cassette) as it's really a 'groupset'.

There is also the aspect of the the gaps/jumps between the gears. It's all well and good having a 50 to drag you up a hill but if there are 8 fewer teeth on the next lowest sprocket it's not great.

Drop the importer a line and let us know what they say?

I got my advent X stuff from KidsRacing 10 speed Advent X

[img] [/img]

Works really well on my winter Moxie Mx3 hardtail. 11-48 cassette still climbs anything. Do not think I will be going back to 1x12 AXS it replaced. For the performance and terrain up in Scotland makes total sense. Not a worry at all. Money into suspension & brakes but for droppers and driveline not too bothered. A season here just kills it if you ride through winter.

Advent X looks like a great product.

It does, and so does plain old Advent (9spd) and Acolyte (8spd) - both intended for 1x use with wide range cassettes, both available with some flavour of clutch integrated into the rear mech... It's almost as if Shimano and SRAM could have sold us such products all along, but for some reason didn't, strange eh?

We may be heading into the "less is more" phase of the cycling arms race, as the global economy shits itself silly once more.

Of course if you're unable to stomach the idea of kit below XT level then this is all mad gibberish and you're just going to have to sell a kidney...

In answer to OP, no but it's forced me to adapt. Luckily got a good trade deal on a Whyte 909 in 2018 and it was an early modern geometry bike. So I've decided to run the frame until it dies (which is likely never), swap the fork out every five years and I've switched from GX Eagle cassette and freehub to a steel Hope 11 speed hyperglide freehub and Sunrace cassette. Plus I've learnt to build wheels, which makes life a lot cheaper as you can keep re-using expensive components like Hope hubs.

To answer the OP, no I haven't been priced out. But I haven't bought a new bike in about 2 years as I've been happy on my Fugio. Thankfully it's not needed anything other than a set of brake pads in that time.

I once thought as you do.

Then they changed headtube standards.

If a bike is only two years old that is new! Not brand new but it's a new bike.

Is 2018 only a few bike modern be Geo? I though it was pretty mainstream by then?
I am hunting at the moment and have been looking at 2018 and assuming they would have be on the rights side of the big geo changes

Sorry, no comprende, but my large 2018 909 has 65 HA, 73 SA and 1207mm wheelbase, so pretty good by today's numbers I think. Certainly rides confidently.

It's funny how Vitus can manage an XT sommet with fox kashima for £4000 but Nukeproof think £5400 is the right price for an equivalent mega, the frame prices only have a £600 price difference, I think most other companies have got together and decided £5500-£6000 is about right for similar spec, even then some do a mix with SLX bits.

I thought the “comment” was simply mocking the idea that bike companies collude to set higher prices.

There has always been something fishy with pricing in the cycling industry. The biggest question is the discrepancy in prices for parts vs complete bikes.

The fact that a company can order an excess of components for complete bikes, sell the unused parts off to CRC and the like, who can then sell it directly to consumers for less than a shop can buy it from the official distributor has always struck me as strange.

Maybe not collusion but it feels like there is some sharp practice going on somewhere.

Correct. The industry as a whole can’t settle on a standard wheel size, let alone a price for different spec levels. They will benchmark against others, but to say that they all get together to set a price is, IMO, laughably ridiculous.

Kelvin, its more like companies followed suit rather than got together, but I think it was tongue in cheek anyway. IF we had more companies like Vitus and canyon the market would be more competitively priced but companies like Yeti seem to charge what they want and there's always people willing to pay whatever, I think the price comparison was the main point.

We do all know that Vitus and Nukeproof are the same company, right? It's all CRCWiggle. They're hitting different price points with different branding... it's all catalogue shopping own brands. Others won't be working with them to set prices. They won't necessarily be able to match them even if they want to.

I knew Vitus but didn’t know Nukeproof are CRC. Does someone have made a WHO OWNS WHO chart for the bike brands? It used to be quite easy to keep track, but not now.

I don’t know, hopefully we’ve hit a ceiling on new gear prices now. Disposable income is reducing across the board, surely there are less of these mythical mysterious buyers who keep the market price of a pushbike above that of a motorbike…

Vitus is CRC own brand, whereas Nukeproof is Hotlines own brand. Chiggle own them both but NP is priced to sell via other shops, so includes extra margin for the shop.

Not sure that's true. The industry as a whole has most definitely settled on a wheel size.... it's whatever people dobt have, and will continue to be so.

First it was 26
Then 6fiddy
Then 29
Then mullet
