I've got 2 nine speed KMC chains, one gold and one silver. Makes diddly squat difference to shifting. When I bought the gold one it was only because at the time it was cheaper than the silver one. It doesn't wear off all that fast and does look OK when it's cleaned up. I wouldn't say it looks stupid but if you've got other gold bits it makes sense I guess.

Strange that people see gold chains as tacky but I'm sure most people have a shiny silver one. I remember not that long ago they were black, oily and performed pretty much the same job.
