I've always been a Fox fan and fancy some 36s for my Hightower. It handles great with 140mm Pikes but with the Trans Savoie looming next year, I think some 160s will be the way to go. With that in mind, some 160/140 Talas forks could be idea.
I've had a couple of sets over the years with Mixed results. I had some 2010 36s which were reliable but a bit sticky at the top of the travel and then some 2014 34s which worked really well but the Talas mechanism locked down on two occasions so I just had them converted to Floats.
I've read good things about the new ones and note that they are standard fit on the £8k Trek Slash 9.9 which has had rave reviews, but has anyone on here had any real world experience?
Thanks in advance.
160 floats drop to 140 just using spacers, not difficult to do
If you're buying to run them 140 with occasional alps trips at 160, I'd go that route, rather than the compromise of the TALAS
I reckon if I had the option I'd change the travel quite a lot as I visit DH venues once a month or so. Spacers is always an option but I think the question is more about how much of a compromise the latest Talas actually is.
Talas is a big compromise it is much less tunable (no volume spacers) and it seems to be that if you set it up to work good at 160 then 140 will feel shit or the other way around. I would just get 150mm float 36.
I was setting up a set today and they just don't feel as good as the floats I don't see the point at all.
I didn't realise that Talas had less tuning ability. I think a float 160 spaces down to 140 or 150 for daily use makes the most sense so I can run 160 on uplift days and in the alps and then drop it back down.
Useful feedback - thanks all.
FWIW I had dropped Mojo an email to ask their opinion and they echoed wiggles' comments and said a float is a better bet.
Thanks all
I've got 150mm 36 floats on my hightower but the front feels a little low for my liking. Will be extending them to 160mm when I get chance as I think the frame would suit it well.
I have the Talas 160mm on my new Slash. Very early days but they're good so far. I had someone set them up for me and so far they seem to be better than my 2016 160mm solo floats, but that could be down to how they're set up on that bike. Small bump sensitivity is great. They seem to sit further in the travel than the floats. I'm a fairly light rider at around 62kg.
Seem to be easy to go from 130- 160, although the bike climbs just as well on the 160 mode. Not sure I'd use the shorter travel option for descending so can't comment on that.
New lyrik dual airs can now have tokens added to them.
julzm - do they feel different when in 130mm mode in terms of damping etc?
